    1. IIRC the announcement did not say never seen in a DSLR but new to Canon – wifi will be new to a Canon DSLR at this level.

      1. If that’s the interpretation, Canon would be splitting straws.

FYI, the 6D has WiFi. If it’s via your interpretation you could also say that built-in GPS would be “new to a Canon dSLR at this level”. So I find that interpretation doubtful.

I suspect it has to do with the new switch under the joystick. If it’s not marked, it has to be a major functionality.

        1. I know it is ambiguous and has been the subject of much discussion. Mind you, I haven’t been able to find an official statement about ‘new functionality’ either so I have no idea how much is genuine or rumour.

        2. it’ll usually be followed up a asterisk and then in the fine print it’ll be like “of any canon full frame camera” which is just the typical marketing crap

  1. anyone else kinda bummed that it looks like it won’t be a full magnesium alloy body?? plus it kinda looks a little less streamlined than the previous 5d’s

    1. I think we all accepted that some part of the pentaprism hump had to be polycarbonate to allow the GPS patch antenna to work. All things considered I think this approach will be better than the polycarbonate “hatch” design of the 7DMkII and 1DXMkII.

      1. true, but idk, just seems a little off to me, especially since i can see the individual lines where they made it. I feel like it would have at least looked a bit better had they made it one solid piece instead of making the top three different parts.

        1. I would assume that there’s only two parts: the polycarbonate hump cover and the single magnesium body piece that’s bridged between the two sides underneath.

          1. if you look at the pictures closely you can see that the top polycarbonate part is separated into 3 pieces, the 2 sides and the top piece around the hotshoe

    1. ordinarily I wouldn’t have bothered, but once you get used to something it’s difficult to accept less. I’ve become accustomed to a somewhat flippy screen on the A7Rii. Same goes with the EVF: OVF is a bit flat after EVF, but still has its benefits (like not draining the battery)

    2. It has built in wifi. You can use a mobile phone as a unlimited moving touchscreen. (e.g. Have you seen you can even do video control over wifi on the 80D?)

    1. which darkside? iPhone? 😉 Canon has 70% of the DSLR market. Mirrorless is coming on but still can’t compete with this class of camera for getting the shot: ease of use, speed, control layout all count when you’re scrambling to get the shot.

  2. While it is disappointing that there is no flip screen, think of what would have to change in the button layout on the left. Either that or they would have had to shrink the size of the LCD.

  3. If this is the actual feature list, or even close to it, then I’m very happy to see that Canon have finally put WiFi and GPS in the camera instead of charging stupid amounts for add-ons. I love Canon gear but boy, they really don’t give anything away they don’t have to. And NFC too!

The big question is what’s the IQ & DR like? I don’t see myself rushing out immediately getting a 5D4 when my 3 is still giving sterling service. But if the sensor gets anywhere close to the Sony A7Rii then it could be a game changer.

What’s “time lapse movie”? Built-in interval timer, but only for movies? If it handles still images too then there’s one less item to carry in the bag (TC-80 N3)

      1. Hopefully now they’re combining WiFi & GPS in a camera with a decent AF system. I am in the 5D camp, never considered a 6D because of the relatively useless, old-style Canon AF (fine if you’re doing landscapes & portraits but no good if what you’re shooting moves)

  4. Right now the Sony and new Fuji XT2 blow away Canon at high ISO quality and have a great silent mode while Canon does not. Canon lost a lot of market share to Sony and Fuji because they dragged their feet with very little updates. Flip screen was badly needed and they failed big time,

  5. Would have easily taken less megapixels for less crop. I would even be happy with a bigger pixel video specialized version like the A7S, such as a 12 megapixel 5Dc.
