Sony’s 400mm f/4.5 GM, 600mm f/6.3 GM, and 8-14mm Fisheye G Set for September 8, With Leaked US and Euro Prices

Sony Alpha Rumors dates the FE 400mm f/4.5 GM OSS, 600mm f/6.3 GM OSS, and 8-14mm f/3.5 G to September 8 around 3 p.m. London time, and adds leaked euro prices next to the earlier U.S. figures.

Sony Alpha Rumors says a trusted source has now locked the date: the three new FE lenses — FE 400mm f/4.5 GM OSS, FE 600mm f/6.3 GM OSS, and the FE 8-14mm f/3.5 Fisheye G — will be announced on September 8 around 3 p.m. London time. A follow-up leak adds European street-style prices next to the earlier U.S. dollar figures.

This is still a rumor, not a Sony press release. No optical formula, autofocus type, or weather-sealing claim has been shown for the two primes. Treat the numbers below as the leak, not a spec sheet.

The leaked kit, in one table

Lens Size / weight (leak) U.S. (leak) Europe (leak)
FE 400mm f/4.5 GM OSS 108 × 242mm, 994g $2,699–$2,899 ~€3,000
FE 600mm f/6.3 GM OSS 108 × 263mm, 995g ~ $3,800 ~€4,200
FE 8-14mm f/3.5 G not in the leak ~ $1,499 ~€1,700

Both GM primes land just under a kilogram. That is the actual story. Sony’s current 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS and 600mm f/4 GM OSS are the heavy, expensive flagships; these would sit underneath them as carry-around wildlife glass, the same niche Nikon already occupies with the Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S and Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S.

How the Nikon comparison is being sold

SAR is measuring the leaked Sony pair against those two Nikon primes. Official Nikon figures (without tripod collar) are 1,160g for the Z 400mm f/4.5 and 1,390g for the Z 600mm f/6.3. Against those, a 994g Sony 400mm is about 14% lighter; a 995g Sony 600mm is about 28% lighter — the same percentages SAR published. The Sony 400mm is also a bit longer and wider on paper (108 × 242mm vs Nikon’s 104 × 234.5mm). The 600mm is shorter than Nikon’s 278mm barrel.

On price, SAR says the U.S. 400mm would undercut Nikon by about $500, and the 600mm by about $1,300. The European leak is less dramatic: the 400mm at ~€3,000 is “just like the Nikkor,” and the 600mm at ~€4,200 is about €300 cheaper. The site had earlier wondered whether the dollar numbers were too good and might have been wholesale. The euro list is presented as buyer-facing pricing. Until Sony publishes a sheet, both columns are still leaks.

The fisheye zoom is the odd one out: G, not GM, no size in this dump, and the only member of the trio with leaked photos. We covered that product shot here — aperture ring, 8/11/14 marks, G badge. U.S. ~$1,499 / EU ~€1,700 is now attached to it as a rumor price, not as something the photo proved.
