Canon’s Higher-End PowerShot Won’t Be a G7 X Mark IV, Says Latest Leak

Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III — the camera fans keep expecting a sequel to. The latest leak says not to.

If you have been waiting for a PowerShot G7 X Mark IV, the newest Canon Rumors note is a cold splash. The site’s sources now say Canon’s next higher-end PowerShot will be a “departure” from the G7 X Mark III, and that you should not expect something that looks or behaves like the G7 series in a lot of ways.

That is a sharper claim than the spring talk of a G7X successor with “new technology” and a three-model PowerShot comeback. Those reports still matter as background. This update is about the premium compact specifically: it is not being drawn as a refreshed G7 X III.

What the leak actually says

Canon Rumors separates this camera from an entry-level PowerShot it has already heard about. The two are “nothing like” each other. The same briefing repeats that Canon has five unreleased cameras in the pipeline, and that at least two are PowerShots.

On the imaging side, the G7 X Mark III’s 1-inch stacked CMOS is a Sony part. The new compact is said to use a larger sensor made by Canon. The exact format was not given — so this is not a confirmed 1.4-inch V1 chip, and it is not a confirmed step between 1-inch and 1.4-inch. Canon Rumors also heard the sensor would be stacked, then immediately hedged: that detail may be an assumption from recent Canon history, not a locked spec.

For reference, the same post reminds readers that the video-first PowerShot V1 uses a 1.4-inch CMOS that is not stacked, and that it is widely thought to be built around the 32.5MP sensor in the EOS R7.

A fast zoom, not a G7 clone

The lens brief is thin but consistent: a fast zoom with a variable aperture. “Fast” was not defined. Canon Rumors’ own wish is something at least in G7 X III territory (that camera is f/1.8–2.8 across 24–100mm equivalent). That is a hope, not a leaked f-stop.

A larger sensor in a pocket body usually means software doing some of the optical work. The leak says computational correction is highly likely, with the V1 cited as the current example in Canon’s compact lineup.

When, and for how much

There is still no announcement date. Canon Rumors now predicts very late Q4 2026 or the first two months of 2027, with CES or CP+ as the obvious stages — a later window than the late-September PowerShot chatter from earlier this year. A source did say the camera will not be priced above $1,000 in the U.S. No street price, kit, or model name was attached.

Treat all of this as a rumor. Canon has not confirmed a stills-first PowerShot flagship, a sensor size, or a 2026/2027 show slot.
