Sony has filled the hole the leaks pointed at. The FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS (SEL400F45GM) (B&H Photo Video) and FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS (SEL600F63GM) (B&H Photo Video) are official: G Master primes, Optical SteadyShot, and Sony’s claim that each is the world’s lightest lens in its class as of this announcement. Both are due in October 2026.
US list is $2,699.99 for the 400mm and $3,699.99 for the 600mm (Canada: $3,579.99 / $4,999.99). The September 8 rumor dump had the 400mm at $2,699–$2,899 and the 600mm around $3,800. Sony landed on the cheap end of the 400mm band and a hundred under the 600mm leak. Size and weight were already right: the press sheet matches the leaked 108mm barrels, 242mm / 263mm lengths, and sub-kilo masses.

The numbers Sony published
| FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS | FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS | |
|---|---|---|
| SKU | SEL400F45GM | SEL600F63GM |
| Size (dia. × length) | 108 × 242mm | 108 × 263mm |
| Weight | ~994g | ~995g |
| US / CA MSRP | $2,699.99 / $3,579.99 | $3,699.99 / $4,999.99 |
| With 1.4× / 2× TC | up to 800mm | up to 1200mm |
Weights exclude the tripod collar. Sony’s “lightest in class” footnotes are narrow: the 400mm against full-frame 400mm primes at f/4.5 or faster; the 600mm against 600mm primes at f/6.3 or faster. That is the Nikon Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S / Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S comparison the leaks were already running — Nikon’s own collar-off figures are 1,160g and 1,390g. Sony is not claiming to beat a 400mm f/2.8 or a 600mm f/4.
Optics, from the same sheet: three Super ED elements and one ED, Nano AR Coating II, 11-blade circular diaphragm. Autofocus is two XD Linear Motors, rated for Alpha 9 III 120fps with AF/AE tracking. OSS is built in; Sony also lists coordinated Active Mode with compatible bodies and in-camera breathing compensation for video.

Handling is the pitch
Sony keeps repeating the center of gravity. It sits closer to the camera / tripod foot than the front glass, so the 242mm and 263mm tubes are meant to be walked around, not parked on a gimbal head. Four customizable focus-hold buttons around the barrel, a function ring, focus-range limiter, Full-time DMF, AF/MF, and an OSS mode switch are the control list. Dust- and moisture-resistant (not fully sealed) plus a fluorine front coating cover the outdoor claim. Compatible TCs are the existing SEL14TC and SEL20TC.
Sony did not put a minimum-focus distance, magnification, filter size, or element/group count on the Alpha Universe launch page. Do not fill those in from the old leak notes. The 8-14mm fisheye G from the same rumor trio already launched last week: $1,599.99, 314g.
