Will a successor to Canon’s EOS R3 be released in 2026? CR thinks so.
Following the announcement of Canon EOS R1, many questions arose regarding the future of the “3 series” lineup. These inquiries are justified, as Canon EOS R3 caters to a similar audience as the R1. Canon has officially confirmed that the EOS R3 will remain in production, even with the impending launch of the R1. This decision may stem from inventory levels or available parts, but it’s likely a wise strategy, as the R3 will be significantly more affordable than the R1. If demand persists, Canon may continue to manufacture the R3.
According to a source familiar with Canon’s plans, there is an intention to sustain the 3 series beyond the EOS R3’s lifecycle. This informant reportedly saw an internal roadmap slide, which Canon occasionally shares and has a reputation for being accurate regarding future products. The information noted “New 3 Q1-Q2 2026,” but specifics about the planned product were not disclosed. It remains uncertain whether the new model will target the same clientele as the R1 or shift focus entirely.
Historically, Canon has offered integrated grip options within the EOS-1Ds and EOS-1D lines before merging them into the EOS-1D X, shifting higher resolution options to the 5 series. The only product referenced in past slides that hasn’t been realized is the EOS R7 C, indicating not all concepts come to fruition.
If a 3 series camera is indeed slated for early 2026, substantial development may still be in the early stages. Differentiating it from the 1 and 5 series poses a challenge, but one possibility is integrating the EOS R5 Mark II sensor into a more compact body. Ultimately, the fate of the 3 series will largely depend on the market demand for the R3 and input from professional users of both the R1 and R5.
