Ricoh Imaging has confirmed the next GR is already in the works: the RICOH GR IVx, a 40mm-equivalent companion to last year’s 28mm GR IV. The August 27, 2026 Tokyo development announcement includes a full specification table “as of the announcement of development,” which usually means the camera is well along — even though Ricoh only commits to a launch in winter 2026 or later and has not named a price.

A new 40mm lens, not a GR IIIx carry-over

The IVx uses a newly designed 26.1mm f/2.8 GR lens (about 40mm in 35mm terms), built from 8 elements in 6 groups with three aspherical elements. That is a more complex formula than the GR IIIx’s 7 elements / 5 groups with two asphericals, even though the focal length and f/2.8 maximum aperture look familiar on paper.

Ricoh’s argument is the same one it made in 2021: 40mm sits closer to the effective field of human vision than the 28mm GR IV, and it changes how snapshots are framed. In-camera crops of 50mm and 71mm are listed. Macro focus is about 0.12–0.24m from the lens front, and a 2-stop ND filter is still built in.

GR IV internals, not GR IIIx leftovers

DPReview flags the important platform change: the IVx takes the GR IV’s approximately 25.74-megapixel APS-C backside-illuminated CMOS (23.3 × 15.5mm), not the 24.24MP front-side-illuminated sensor in the GR IIIx. The rest of the development sheet tracks the current 28mm model closely:

  • 5-axis sensor-shift Shake Reduction, plus the AA-filter simulator and DR II ultrasonic dust removal
  • ISO 100–204800
  • Hybrid phase-detection + contrast AF, Snap distances, Full Press Snap, and face/eye detection
  • 3.0-inch, 1.037-million-dot touch LCD
  • 4K 30p/24p and Full HD 60p/30p/24p
  • About 53GB of internal storage plus microSD (UHS-I)
  • Wi-Fi including 802.11ax on 2.4 / 5.2 / 5.8 GHz bands (some bands vary by region)
  • DB-120 battery, about 250 shots (CIPA)
  • About 109.4 × 61.1 × 33.4mm; about 265g with battery and card

Ricoh says it also plans “other new functions” for the official launch. Specifications and design can still change.

GR IIIx production is winding down

With some parts going out of supply, production of the GR IIIx, GR IIIx HDF, and GR IIIx Urban Edition is expected to end with units shipped in October 2026 in Japan. Overseas end dates may differ. That could leave a short gap if the IVx slips past winter.

For context, DPReview notes that the GR IV reached store shelves about three months after its own development announcement. The IVx window is looser: winter 2026 or later.
