The Canon EOS R8 Mark II now has a date. Canon Rumors says the travel-oriented full-frame body will be announced on September 15, 2026 (give or take a timezone).
The latest briefing also fills in the rest of the package: same size and weight as the current R8, in-body stabilization, a recycled 24.2MP sensor, and a body-only price around $1,800.
IBIS Finally Comes to the R8 Line
The original EOS R8 skipped IBIS to stay small and cheap. That is the headline change this time: Canon Rumors says the Mark II will have in-body image stabilization, and that the body stays the same size and weight as today’s R8.
Sources also describe a more premium feel — nicer in the hand, more solid, and with better materials. The SD slot gets its own door instead of sharing space with the battery. The catch: it still sounds like a single SD card slot, not the dual-card setup from earlier rumor rounds.
Canon is also sticking with the LP-E17 battery. That keeps the body compact, but it is the same small cell many shooters already dislike in cold weather.
24.2MP Confirmed Again
The sensor rumor is no longer a maybe. Canon Rumors now says the R8 Mark II will reuse the 24.2MP FSI CMOS from the EOS R8 and EOS R6 Mark II — matching the 24MP, not 32.5MP update from earlier this month.
That keeps the camera out of R6 Mark III / C50 territory on megapixels. The trade-off Canon appears to be selling is speed and handling instead: rumored 40fps electronic shutter, IBIS, and a more angular “retro” design. No silver version is expected.
Grip Accessory and EL-5 Mark II
Because the body stays small, Canon is said to be adding a compact add-on grip that increases vertical height. It is for ergonomics only — not a battery grip.
Launching alongside the camera: the Speedlite EL-5 Mark II.
Rumored Specs
- 24MP FSI full-frame CMOS (same class as EOS R8 / R6 Mark II)
- In-body image stabilization
- 40fps electronic shutter
- Single SD card slot
- LP-E17 battery
- Same size and weight as the current EOS R8
- More angular design language; no silver version reported
- Price: about $1,800 (give or take $100)
For context, the original EOS R8 launched at $1,699 in February 2023. A modest bump would not be a surprise if IBIS actually makes the cut.
Canon Rumors has not seen the camera in person. Treat the date and spec list as a strong rumor package, not an official announcement — but September 15 is now the date to watch.
