Canon EOS R3 Eye AF Works on Butterflies and Bees: Amazing!

ThePhoblographer posted a review of Canon EOS R3 (Amazon/ B&H/ Adorama.) working on Animal Eye Recognition AF. It is just amazing!

There are several other cameras with Animal Eye AF, but many of them have dark-colored animal dark-eyed AF .  Canon EOS R3 can even finely focus on small animals such as the black-capped chickweed, which has dark wings and black eyes .

They had the opportunity to test Canon RF 100mm F2.8L macro and realized that when Canon EOS R3 displayed a focus box around the butterfly’s eye, Canon’s Eye AF was better than focusing on the black-capped chick’s eye. The animal AF of R3 was astonishing because it was insane that it focused on the eyes of insects.

The AF of Canon R3 recognized and chased the entire flying bumblebee, and when it got closer, it chased the eyes of the bumblebee alternately. The pattern of the wings of a butterfly may be confusing, and the AF of the insect’s eyes is not perfect, but if you specify the AF focusing point with your finger, the insect will move and you will not be able to shoot, so this AF is an insect. It’s a big advantage in shooting.

Canon EOS R3 is the best AF system they have ever used (although some cameras, such as Nikon Z9, haven’t been tested yet). If Canon EOS R10 and R7 really have the AF cleverness of Canon EOS R3, as Canon claims, these cameras should be a breakthrough for beginners shooting wildlife.

The animal recognition AF installed in recent cameras may recognize animals other than dogs, cats and birds, but the AF of Canon EOS R3 is amazing in recognizing the eyes of small insects.

It seems that the recognition of insect eyes is not perfect, but if you want to shoot insects in a hurry, this AF seems to be very useful. It is interesting to see how much the AF of Canon R3 is inherited by the lower models Canon EOS R10 and Canon EOS R7.
