Canon EOS R1 to be Released Before EOS R5 Mark II

Canon is planning major camera releases in 2024, focusing on prosumer and professional models including the long-awaited EOS R1 mirrorless camera. The EOS R1 will arrive “well before” an EOS R5 Mark II model, likely dashing hopes for a February announcement at CP+ despite past speculation.

We expect Canon will officially unveil the EOS R1 like they did with the EOS R3, beginning with a development announcement revealing some initial details before the final release. Intriguingly, sources say the R1 will have “less resolution than many think” – perhaps implying it won’t shoot 8K video, meaning under 45 megapixels compared to the R5.

This lower resolution may disappoint some, but 8K video still faces adoption challenges. The R5 line seems likely to retain 8K capabilities moving forward for those needing it, and may be better ergonomically once rigged up. So landscape, architecture, and commercial photographers needing maximum resolution should look to a high megapixel R5 instead.

For now, sources suggest the EOS R5 Mark II will arrive in the second half of 2024. So while Canon unleashes its flagship R1 sooner for sports and action photographers, a refreshed R5 will come later to appeal to both video and high-resolution stills shooters.

The R1 may play a role akin to Nikon’s Z 9 mirrorless flagship, with a scaled-down “baby” R1 possible later on. But either way, Canon’s roadmap indicates an action-oriented R1 is up first to spearhead their pro push in 2024, followed by updates to the popular R5 lineup.
