Fresh information from Canon Rumors revises one of the biggest assumptions about the upcoming Canon EOS R8 Mark II: it is not expected to use the 32.5MP sensor from the EOS R6 Mark III and Cinema EOS C50.
According to the latest update, the R8 Mark II will instead ship with a full-frame CMOS sensor around 24 megapixels.
Why the 24MP Choice Matters
Plenty of rumor coverage had pointed toward Canon’s newer 32.5MP chip as the obvious next step for the affordable full-frame body. That no longer appears to be the plan.
A 24MP still makes commercial sense for the R8 line. The original EOS R8 already lived in that resolution class, and a refined 24MP sensor can prioritize readout speed, rolling-shutter control, low-light behavior, and pricing over pixel count.
What remains unclear:
- Whether Canon is introducing a brand-new 24MP sensor
- Or recycling / refining the 24.2MP sensor from the EOS R6 Mark II
Canon Rumors says it is safe to assume the camera will not use the sensor from the EOS R1.
September Launch Window
The announcement timing is still a moving target, but the current expectation is mid-September 2026, or possibly later in the month. The R8 Mark II is expected to arrive alongside a few new lenses.
Retro Design Still on the Table
The “retro” styling rumor has not been walked back. Canon Rumors continues to expect a retro-inspired design language — with the important caveat that nobody yet knows what Canon means by “retro” in practice.
Bottom Line
If this sensor report holds, the EOS R8 Mark II looks less like a resolution leap and more like a carefully positioned refresh: familiar megapixel count, potentially improved internals, and a design that may break from Canon’s current slab-style mirrorless bodies. More details are expected soon.
