Sony photographers have reason to be excited as major announcements are expected between mid-November and early December, with rumors pointing to November 19-20th as the likely announcement window. Among the highly anticipated releases are the Sony a7 V camera and potentially a refreshed version of the popular FE 100-400mm telephoto zoom lens.
The Sony a7 V has already been registered in Indonesia with code “WW824259” and is manufactured in Thailand, suggesting an imminent announcement. Early specifications point to a 33-megapixel sensor—possibly a tweaked version of the a7 IV sensor or a new partially stacked design—along with a new AI processing chip similar to the Sony a1 II. The camera is expected to retain the a7R V body design with the same four-way fully articulating screen and controls, priced close to $3,000.
While the FE 100-400mm GM II lens hasn’t been officially confirmed for November, there’s growing speculation about its development. The 100-400mm is notably the only zoom lens from its initial release generation that hasn’t received a GM II refresh, making it a prime candidate for an update. Photographers are hoping for improvements in optical performance, potentially faster apertures, and the addition of features like an aperture ring to align with other GM II lenses.
The timing would be strategic for Sony, as the current 100-400mm GM lens remains popular among wildlife, sports, and travel photographers. A refreshed version could address the competitive landscape and incorporate the latest optical technologies and autofocus innovations that Sony has developed since the original lens’s 2017 release.
If announced in November, shipping for new products would likely begin in January or February, giving photographers something to look forward to in the new year. These potential releases would strengthen Sony’s already robust full-frame mirrorless ecosystem and provide compelling options for both enthusiasts and professionals.
