Sigma 50mm F1.4 CL DG: a 375g metal F1.4 that gives up sharpness for character

Sigma has announced the 50mm F1.4 CL DG | Contemporary, the first lens in a new “CL” line inside its I series. It is a full-frame prime for L-Mount and Sony E, in black and silver. Sigma has not given a price. DPReview says the company expects it in early spring 2027.

The pitch is the opposite of the F1.4 Art. Sigma is trading corner sharpness for size and a softer look, and says it controlled aberrations on purpose, with simulation, “for soft rendering of texture.” The body is all metal, with a knurled hood and rings, a magnetic metal cap, a depth-of-field scale, and hard stops at both ends of focus.

Size: use Sigma’s numbers

DPReview describes the lens as “around 65mm long.” Sigma’s own spec page lists a diameter of 64.7 mm and a length of 54.0 mm for L-Mount and 56.0 mm for Sony E, so the 65mm figure looks like the diameter. The weight is 375 g for both mounts. DPReview compares that with the 50mm F1.4 DG DN Art at about 110 mm and 670 g, and says the new lens is only a touch heavier than the 50mm F2 I series.

Earlier reports said the lens would match the Art optically at half the size. Sigma’s wording points the other way. DPReview reads the corners as especially soft, from the release alone, and has not shot the lens.

How it focuses

To keep the barrel short, Sigma dropped inner focusing for whole-lens extension. The heavier focus group is driven by a new RDD (Rotary Direct Drive) actuator: the coils and magnets from the HLA linear motor, arranged in a ring around the barrel. Turning the focus ring during AF switches to manual at once, with no AF/MF switch. DPReview adds that Sigma says the group can wobble a little, so it is not the best choice for continuous AF in video.
