No Nikon Z90 to be Announced Next Month?

Nikon Z90 is not coming soon! According to NR, Nikon Z90 is an APS-C camera and  there will definitely be no Z90 announcement next month.

Nikon Z90 is widely expected to be Nikon’s first high-performance APS-C (DX) mirrorless camera, filling a massive gap in their lineup. It would be positioned above the consumer-friendly Z50 and Z fc, targeting enthusiasts, wildlife photographers, and action/sports shooters on a budget.

Likely Key Features & Rumors:

  1. Sensor: A new high-resolution APS-C BSI CMOS sensor, likely in the 30-33MP range. This would offer a significant jump from the 20.9MP of the Z50/D7500, providing better detail and more cropping flexibility for wildlife and sports.

  2. Processor: The latest EXPEED 7 processor (from the Z8/Z9). This is crucial as it would enable the camera’s most anticipated features.

  3. Autofocus: The advanced AI-powered subject detection from the Z8/Z9. Expect reliable and deep learning-based detection of People, Animals (Birds, Dogs, Cats), Cars, and Airplanes. This would be a game-changer for the APS-C segment.

  4. Speed & Buffering:

    • High Continuous Shooting: Likely 15-20 fps with full AF/AE, potentially with a 30+ fps electronic shutter mode (with some caveats).

    • Deep Buffer: A large buffer to handle long bursts of RAW files, essential for action photography.

  5. Video Capabilities: Aimed at hybrid shooters.

    • 4K 60p (likely with a slight crop) and 4K 30p full-width from the oversampled sensor.

    • 10-bit N-Log and possibly HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) for color grading.

    • Likely no internal ProRes RAW (reserved for Z8/Z9), but external RAW via HDMI is possible.

  6. Body & Build:

    • Larger, more robust body than the Z50, with a deeper grip.

    • Weather-sealed magnesium alloy chassis (similar to the D500 legacy).

    • Dual card slots (CFexpress Type B + SD UHS-II or dual SD). This is a highly demanded feature for pros and serious enthusiasts.

  7. Viewfinder & Display:

    • High-resolution EVF (around 3.69 million dots).

    • fully articulating vari-angle touchscreen (unlike the Z50’s limited tilt screen), crucial for both video and stills at awkward angles.

  8. Lens Lineup Synergy: Its release would likely be paired with or followed by more high-performance DX Z-mount lenses. The existing Z DX 12-28mm f/3.5-5.6 VR and Z DX 24mm f/1.7 are starters, but expect faster zooms or primes to complement the Z90’s capabilities.
