Nikon Z50 II Officially Announced, Available for Pre-Order

Nikon has just officially announced the new Nikon Z50 II.  It is Nikon’s latest APS-C camera, based around the company’s tried-and-true 20.9MP sensor, featuring 3D tracking with support for nine subject types, and up to one second of pre-release capture.

This new camera is now available for pre-order at B&H/ Adorama.

A Compact Powerhouse for Exploration and Creativity

Introducing the Nikon Z50 II Mirrorless Camera: a powerful yet compact choice tailored for emerging creators. With its 20.9MP APS-C CMOS sensor and interchangeable lens system, this camera is packed with premium features and is compatible with the full range of NIKKOR Z lenses, allowing you to elevate your content beyond what a smartphone can achieve.

20.9MP DX-Format CMOS Sensor & EXPEED 7 Image Processor
The DX-format 20.9MP CMOS sensor works in harmony with the advanced EXPEED 7 image processor—also found in Nikon’s flagship full-frame models. This combination offers exceptional high sensitivity, outstanding image quality, rapid, AI-assisted autofocus, and continuous shooting at up to 30 fps. With a native ISO range of 100-51200, the Z50 II excels in various lighting conditions, reaching up to ISO 204800 for incredibly low-light scenarios. The balance of resolution and sensor size ensures clean images with smooth color transitions and minimal noise throughout the sensitivity spectrum.

Nikon’s Most Advanced Autofocus
Leveraging algorithms and deep learning from the Z9, the Z50 II features advanced Subject Detection for nine different types of subjects, including people, animals, airplanes, and bicycles. The popular Bird Detection mode is also included. In Auto-Area AF, the camera will automatically detect, focus on, and track these subjects, ensuring sharp focus even as they move within the frame. Additionally, Eye-Detection AF has been enhanced for better precision, working seamlessly with custom Wide-Area AF for various subject shapes and sizes.

Pre-Release Capture
Thanks to the EXPEED 7 processor, Pre-Release Capture allows you to capture those decisive moments effortlessly. This feature records frames in a burst up to one second before the shutter is fully pressed. When activated, burst shooting begins with a half-press of the shutter, saving the earlier frames once the shutter is fully engaged.

UHD 4K Video Recording
The Z50 II goes beyond still photography, offering upgraded video capabilities. It supports UHD 4K video recording at up to 60 fps and Full HD recording at 120 fps, alongside a Product Review mode, two-hour recording limits, a video self-timer, built-in electronic Vibration Reduction, and options to save video files directly to memory cards or external recorders via HDMI. In-camera time-lapse shooting allows for the creation of finished UHD 4K video files directly from the camera. Notably, the Z50 II is UAC and UAV compliant for live web streaming, plus it supports internal 10-bit video recording with Nikon’s N-Log LUT and four new RED LUTs.

Color Control for Creators
To enhance creative expression, the Z50 II includes a Picture Control button for easy access to 31 built-in presets, even in Auto mode. These color presets can be visually overlaid on the rear LCD screen as you frame your shots. Users can also explore Creator Recipes from a community of Nikon shooters via the Nikon Imaging Cloud and apply them alongside the built-in presets. Additionally, Nikon offers a one-year subscription to their Cloud Picture Controls software for custom presets and professional editing tools.

Body Design and Connectivity
The Z50 II features a large 3.2″ LCD touchscreen for clear image playback and live view shooting. Its 180° flip-under design facilitates intuitive front-facing selfies and efficient control over settings and navigation. The redesigned electronic viewfinder provides a comfortable eye-level experience, showcasing a significantly brighter display than its predecessor.

With a built-in flash and hot shoe, you can easily add illumination to dimly lit scenes, complemented by a dedicated Night Portrait mode that balances exposure between available and artificial light. The camera also features a headphone jack, which doubles as a terminal for Nikon’s optional MC-DC3 Remote Release Cord, and USB-C for both camera charging and power delivery. It retains the microphone and HDMI ports of its predecessor.

Equipped with built-in SnapBridge connectivity, the Z50 II facilitates the seamless transfer of low-resolution images and remote shooting capabilities. With BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) and Wi-Fi, you can connect the camera to a smart device, enabling remote shutter triggering and live view imaging from a distance.

The camera’s EN-EL25a rechargeable lithium-ion battery extends shooting time, with support for in-camera charging. A single SD memory card slot supports UHS-I protocol for rapid storage of photos and videos.
