The Sony FX6 is Sony’s latest cinema camera that aims to bridge the gap between consumer and professional filmmaking. Released in late 2020, the FX6 incorporates many of the advanced features of Sony’s high-end FX9 while retaining a more compact form factor and lower price point.

At the heart of the FX6 is a 10.2MP full-frame Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ XR processor which enables outstanding image quality with high sensitivity, wide dynamic range and low noise. The camera can shoot oversampled 6K video (downsampled to 4K) for exceptional detail. It offers internal 4K recording at up to 60fps with 10-bit 4:2:2 color sampling for rich color rendition. Slow motion frame rates up to 120fps in full HD are also possible.

A key highlight of the FX6 is its electronic variable ND filter which allows you to smoothly adjust exposure without adding external filters or adjusting ISO. Autofocus is handled by Sony’s fast and accurate Fast Hybrid AF system using 627 phase-detection points over 90% of the image sensor. Face detection and eye AF capabilities make it easy to maintain focus on subjects.

The body design mirrors many aspects of Sony’s Alpha mirrorless cameras with an ergonomic handgrip and well-placed buttons and dials. The lightweight but durable magnesium alloy body is dust and moisture resistant for field use. The large 4” touchscreen LCD provides a bright, detailed live view image and responsive interface. There are numerous mounts and interfaces for attaching accessories, microphones, and external monitors/recorders.

For videographers and filmmakers needing advanced tools in a smaller form factor, the Sony FX6 hits a sweet spot. It combines many of Sony’s latest imaging and video technologies to deliver stunning image quality and reliable high-end features in a versatile camera that is ideal for documentaries, events, commercials and online content creation. The price lands below Sony’s top FX9 model, making the FX6 an attractive option for independent content creators looking to step up production quality without breaking the bank.
