A major leak from SAR has provided the first real look at the upcoming Sony FX5, a highly anticipated addition to Sony’s Cinema Line. The leaked image corrects a significant piece of early speculation: the camera will not feature a global shutter sensor. Instead, it will debut a newly developed 16MP fully stacked sensor, optimized for incredibly fast readout speeds while retaining superior dynamic range and low-light performance.
Positioned as a “Mini Venice,” the FX5 brings high-end cinema capabilities into a remarkably compact body. The leaked interface reveals that the camera abandons the traditional Alpha mirrorless system in favor of the professional Venice menu architecture. The physical button layout has also been redesigned compared to the FX3, notably adding a dedicated False Color button for precise exposure monitoring.
Key Leaked Specifications:
-
Sensor: 16MP fully stacked Full-Frame sensor.
-
Recording Modes: Supports Open Gate 5K 3:2 recording, giving filmmakers maximum framing flexibility.
-
Internal RAW: Built-in X-OCN LT internal RAW recording capability.
-
ISO: Features a Triple Base ISO system for exceptional flexibility across various lighting conditions.
-
Design: Equipped with a massive LCD screen and a compact top handle similar to the FX3 audio adapter.
By offering features like Open Gate, X-OCN RAW, and Venice-style exposure tools in a smaller footprint, the FX5 directly addresses long-standing requests from indie filmmakers and content creators.
The Sony FX5 is expected to be officially announced in the second half of July 2026. Additionally, rumor sources indicate that Sony will announce the RX10 V bridge camera on July 9, kicking off a busy month for Sony hardware.
