Sony a7R V & FX3 Received “The Best Inventions of 2023” by Time Magazine

TIME Magazine recently released their annual list of the 100 Best Inventions that are changing how we live, work, play and think about what’s possible. This year’s diverse list spans advancements in sustainability, entertainment, health and more. Notably, two of Sony’s acclaimed camera models earned spots thanks to their innovative capabilities empowering both professional and amateur creatives.

The remarkable Sony a7R V mirrorless camera took home honors for its game-changing autofocus system aided by a dedicated AI processing unit. This allows the 61-megapixel full-frame sensor model to harness even more visual data to drive next-level intelligent tracking and detection. As TIME’s Alison Van Houten elucidated, “While most autofocus systems are based on face and eye recognition, the Alpha 7R V is trained to recognize and stably track body movements, even if the subject changes course. It’s not limited to humans, either – it also clocks birds with long necks or intricate head feathers, insects like butterflies and dragonflies, cars and more.”

Also making the cut was Sony’s FX3 cinema camera, hailed for democratizing high-end filmmaking by putting pro-grade tools into creators’ hands at consumer prices. Jeff Wilser spotlighted how director Gareth Edwards leveraged the FX3 to shoot his recent blockbuster sci-fi thriller The Creator, yielding big-budget quality without the formidable price tag. As Wilser explained, “The camera can be purchased at electronics stores for under $4,000, and most viewers won’t see a difference in quality. The FX3 is light and compact, but its real superpower is a dramatically high ISO (the sensitivity of the camera’s ability to capture light).”

Edwards himself sang the FX3’s praises, citing how it empowered him to film difficult low light and night shots sans extra gear. “You can basically film in moonlight,” he remarked. Between the enhanced autofocus redefining what’s possible for still photographers and the ability to mimic shots once exclusive to Hollywood, Sony continues pioneering imaging that expands every creator’s potential. Their showings among TIME’s most innovative 2023 products affirms their commitment to accessible breakthroughs that shape visual culture.
