DAVID SCHLOSS posted a full review of the newly announced Sony a7R V (Amazon/ B&H/ Adorama) at the petapixel. It is a Powerful Camera, but is it the right camera for you?
- Sony A7R V is a camera ushering in a new era of AI AF. Despite with a 60-megapixel sensor, Sony a7R V can track subjects with unprecedented precision compared to other Sony machines.
- Sony A7R IV didn’t have enough processing power to handle high pixels, AF was lagging behind other Sony machines, and there was a gap of a month with Sony A9.
- If Sony a7R V AI AF is installed in models with low pixel sensors or stacked sensors, AI AF may become even more powerful.
- Sony A1 can make a difference to the Sony A7R V in continuous shooting speed, but Sony A7R V has performance that surpasses the AF system of Sony A1, and improvements that Sony A1 does not have (especially the tilt and vari-angle monitor) are also applied.
- Sony A7R V’s new AF will confuse anyone thinking of buying a Sony camera. It outperforms Sony A1 in some features, matches Sony A7S III in many video features, and outperforms both Sony A9 and A1 in AF performance.
- Comparing with Sony A1, Sony A7R V is a good choice if continuous shooting at 10 frames per second or more is required.
It’s strange to recommend a high-resolution camera over a flagship camera, but really, the benefits of Sony A7R V outweigh Sony A1 in many areas. It’s not a bad thing that many users prefer a $4,000 (Sony a7R V) camera over a $6,500 (Sony A1) flagship.
