Breaking New Ground in Magnification

What sets this lens apart from its peers is its remarkable 1.4x maximum magnification ratio right out of the box—a specification that already exceeds the 1:1 standard that most macro lenses achieve. But Sony didn’t stop there. When paired with the company’s optional teleconverters, this lens can reach an astounding 2.8x reproduction with the 2x teleconverter, allowing photographers to capture details that would otherwise require specialized equipment or significant cropping in post-production.

This represents a substantial upgrade from Sony’s previous 90mm F2.8 macro lens, positioning the new 100mm as the flagship option for photographers who demand the absolute best in close-up imaging. The ability to achieve such extreme magnification opens up entirely new creative possibilities, from capturing intricate insect anatomy to revealing the microscopic textures in everyday objects.

Optical Excellence Through Advanced Elements

The optical formula is where Sony’s engineering prowess truly shines. Constructed from 17 elements arranged in 13 groups, the lens incorporates two of Sony’s extreme aspherical (XA) elements and two extra-low dispersion (ED) elements. This combination works to minimize chromatic aberrations—those annoying color fringes that can plague macro photography, especially when shooting at wider apertures or dealing with high-contrast subjects.

Sony has also applied its Nano AR II coating across the lens elements, a treatment specifically designed to reduce flare and ghosting when working with backlit subjects. This is particularly valuable in macro photography, where photographers often encounter challenging lighting conditions and need to maintain contrast and clarity across the entire frame. The 11-blade circular aperture diaphragm further contributes to image quality, producing smooth, rounded bokeh that helps isolate subjects from their backgrounds.

Built for the Real World

Macro photography often takes photographers into challenging environments, and Sony has equipped this lens accordingly. The front element features a fluorine coating that repels water, oils, fingerprints, and smudges—essential when you’re working inches away from subjects that might splash. The entire lens body is weather-sealed against dust and moisture, giving photographers the confidence to pursue their subjects regardless of conditions.

At 646 grams and 148 millimeters in length, the lens strikes a reasonable balance between portability and build quality. The 67mm filter thread matches several other Sony G Master lenses, allowing photographers to share filters across their kit—a practical consideration that saves both money and bag space.

Autofocus That Keeps Up

Perhaps one of the most significant improvements over Sony’s previous macro offering is the autofocus system. The lens employs a pair of linear XD motors that Sony claims are faster, more accurate, and quieter than the stepping motor in the older 90mm F2.8 macro. The company reports that the lens supports focus tracking at up to 120 frames per second, opening up possibilities for capturing moving macro subjects that would have been nearly impossible with older technology.

The lens includes a focus clutch mechanism for quick manual focus override, with both distance and magnification markings on the focus ring. A focus limiter switch allows photographers to restrict the autofocus search range, choosing between the full range from 0.5 meters to infinity, or limiting it to 0.26 to 0.7 meters for extreme close-up work. This limitation can significantly speed up focus acquisition when working at specific distances.

Versatility Through Teleconverter Compatibility

The compatibility with Sony’s teleconverters fundamentally changes how macro photographers can approach their subjects. While the lens can achieve 1.4x magnification on its own at approximately 90 millimeters of working distance, adding the 2x teleconverter allows photographers to achieve that same 1.4x magnification from 145 millimeters away. This increased working distance is invaluable when photographing skittish insects or preventing shadows from falling on subjects. The trade-off is a reduction in effective aperture, but modern cameras with excellent high-ISO performance make this less concerning than it once was.

Complete Control

Sony has equipped this lens with an impressive array of controls including switches for clicking and declicking the aperture ring, an iris lock, and optical stabilization control. The lens’s Optical Steady Shot (OSS) system works with compatible camera bodies’ in-body image stabilization, providing coordinated control that minimizes even the smallest vibrations—crucial when working at high magnifications. Twin customizable function buttons allow photographers to assign frequently used functions for quick access.

While this lens excels at macro work, its specifications suggest it’s equally capable as a portrait lens or general-purpose mid-telephoto prime. The Sony FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM will be available for pre-order starting October 1st, with units shipping November 13th.
