Rumors: Canon is Working on RF 28-70mm f/2L II USM Lens

Canon Rumors recently reported that Canon is working on the RF 28-70mm f/2L II USM lens. The original 28-70mm f/2L impressed photographers with its extraordinarily bright f/2 maximum aperture across the zoom range. However, its significant weight has been a deterrent for some.

According to the source, Canon aims to enhance optical performance in the Mark II version while reducing weight substantially. The weight reduction would make this professional zoom more portable and appealing to a larger audience if achieved. With in-body image stabilization in Canon’s latest mirrorless cameras, the sequel likely will not require built-in optical stabilization, helping trim weight.

The RF 28-70mm f/2L Mark II would join other rumored second-generation RF lenses underway. Canon seemingly recognizes opportunities to refine initial RF offerings. Another lens reportedly getting an update this year is the workhorse RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM, likely adding an internal focusing mechanism for faster, quieter autofocus.

While no timeline is given for the 28-70mm Mark II, it may arrive within the next couple of years. Canon wants to demonstrate technical prowess with its RF mount lenses while making them practical for field use. An optically enhanced, lighter-weight 28-70mm f/2L that retains its large aperture could raise the bar for standard zoom lens performance. If the sequel manages significantly better portability without compromising quality, it could become an enticing workhorse lens for Canon mirrorless shooters.
