Canon EOS C70 was officially announced. It is the First Cinema EOS Camera with an RF Mount, featuring a New Compact and Lightweight Body, a Super 35mm Dual Gain Output (DGO) Sensor, DIGIC DV7 Image Processor, and 16+ Stops of Total Dynamic Range. this new camera costs $5,499, available for pre-order at B&H/ Adorama.
- Super 35mm DGO Sensor Delivers Top-Tier 4K
Simply put, the EOS C70 is a pocket C300 Mark III. This is evident in the use of a 4K Super 35mm Dual Gain Output (DGO) sensor with near-identical specs. Advanced processing provided by the DIGIC DV7 will read the exposure at a lower gain and a higher gain simultaneously and then use that data to create a single image with 16+ stops of dynamic range.
Making use of Canon’s advanced Canon Log 2 & 3 gamma profiles, you can be sure you are creating images that offer excellent flexibility in post. It also has standard PQ and HLG HDR.
- Professional, Compact Body Design
Staying mobile can sometimes be just as important as image quality. Documentary filmmakers and run-and-gun filmmaking are two clear examples. The C70 was made with them in mind. Its portable size, including a removable top handle, embraces the slim RF mount while still managing to offer essential features, such as a built-in ND filter system, dual SD card slots, two mini-XLR inputs and timecode in/out, among others.
This design doesn’t give up power either, still managing options such as Electronic IS, Auto ISO/Gain, and RC-V100 remote control support.
- Record DCI 4K Video at up to 120 fps
Professional video equipment usually features a wide selection of frame rates, resolutions, and formats to fit nearly any need. The EOS C70 takes things up a notch with DCI 4K recording at up to 120 fps in 10-bit 4:2:2.
For even more speed, a Super 16mm crop option will permit DCI 2K shooting up to 180 fps. Users will even be able to load custom LUTs for previewing looks and record the footage using Long GOP encoding via XF-AVC, HEVC, and H.264.
- Dual Pixel CMOS AF, Now with Deep Learning
Now leveraging Canon’s EOS iTR AF X, created with deep learning technology, the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system in the C70 can track and follow moving subjects with increased accuracy. A head-detection algorithm, in particular, for Face Detection mode deliver improved accuracy and reliability.
Even before these upgrades, the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system has been regarded as an incredible tool for many filmmakers and videographers.
- Canon RF Lens Mount Brings Ultimate Flexibility
The C70 features the Direct Touch Control system, allowing for extremely intuitive control over most settings via the large 3.5″ vari-angle touchscreen LCD. You can change formats, resolution, start/stop recording, change iris and more just by tapping the screen.
The entire camera is built with video in mind, offering numerous buttons for quick access to common settings and there is ample customization. For vertical shooting (ideal for social media) the C70 has a 1/4″-20 tripod socket on the side of the camera grip.
The first Cinema EOS camera with the newly developed RF lens mount, the C70 has incredible versatility. This allows the use of new RF-mount glass natively with full electronic communication, including Combination IS to leverage electronic and optical stabilization systems.
In addition to native RF lenses, the short flange distance permits the use of many adapters, such as the new EF-EOS R 0.71x optical adapter that maximizes performance of full-frame EF-mount lenses on the C70’s Super 35mm sensor by maintaining the angle of view and improving speed by one stop. Third-party options are endless and will enable the use of nearly any existing lens, meaning you can even tack on a beautiful ARRI PL cinema lens.
