DJI’s Avata is the company’s first FPV drone designed specifically for cinematic flying and content creation. Weighing just 410g, the lightweight and compact Avata can be flown easily in tight spaces while providing an immersive first-person view flying experience.

The Avata comes equipped with a 1/1.7” CMOS sensor capable of capturing 4K/60fps video and 155° super-wide angle footage. This allows pilots to capture cinematic shots with more environment in the frame. The drone’s rocksteady EIS 3.0 stabilization provides smooth footage even in windy conditions. DJI’s signature O3 transmission allows for a maximum control range of 10km at 1080p resolution with near instantaneous response.

Despite its tiny size, the Avata packs in some robust safety features like obstacle avoidance sensors on the front and bottom. These sensors prevent collisions by automatically avoiding obstacles when flying forwards or downwards. However, the lack of side or rear sensors means you’ll need to remain vigilant when maneuvering in tight spaces.

The bundled DJI Motion Controller brings an intuitive way to control the Avata. The ergonomic design allows for single hand operation of the joystick and triggers. Buttons provide quick access to emergency stop and return-to-home functions. The minimalist controller certainly feels futuristic but may take some getting used to compared to traditional dual-stick controllers.

Two battery options are available – the standard Intelligent Flight Battery offers around 18 minutes of flight time while the extended pack provides up to 27 minutes. While not the longest flight times, quick charging via the two-way charging hub brings batteries from 0 to 100 percent in just 50 minutes.

DJI Fly app on mobile devices provides a crisp low latency feed thanks to O3 transmission. The app’s intuitive interface allows you to easily access automated flight modes like MasterShots which capture complex cinematic shots with just a tap. DJI’s flight tutorials make it easy for new FPV pilots to learn the ropes.

With its compact and foldable design, cinematic camera, safety features, and intuitive controls, the Avata makes an appealing option for FPV newbies and pros alike seeking creative aerial footage. Just be prepared to shell out $629 for the drone alone and closer to $1000 for the full Fly Smart combo. So while not exactly affordable, the DJI Avata delivers an exciting new way to shoot videos from the sky.
