Canon to Announce RF 400mm F4 DO IS USM Lens in 2024

According to CR, Canon will announce a new super telephoto short focus lens that uses Canon’s DO lens in 2024.

Although it is a niche lens, it has been loved since the EF mount era, and is scheduled to become a newly designed RF lens in 2024. This lens is RF 400mm F4 DO IS USM lens. Canon manufactured lenses with three “DO” characters (EF 400mm F4 DO IS USM, EF 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 DO IS USM and EF 400mm F4 DO IS USM II). All of these are for EF mount and are no longer in production.

We hear that Canon will once again introduce a DO brand lens to the RF mount with the RF 400mm F4 DO IS USM. This lens is expected to be released sometime in 2024, and Canon will continue to improve its DO lenses.

Canon exhibited a prototype of the EF 600mm F4 DO IS USM several years ago, but it was never commercialized. However, we have received information that Canon is also preparing a 600mm DO lens. This lens will appear later than the RF 400mm F4 DO IS USM.
Recently, Nikon has been expanding its lineup of telephoto lenses, and it looks like Canon is following suit by introducing DO prime lenses. The optical system of the new DO lens is a new design, so it will be interesting to see how much the weak points of the DO lens, such as backlight resistance, and how small the size will be.
