Insta360 X4 Air Officially Announced, Price Starts at $399 !

Insta360 has unveiled the X4 Air (Amazon), a streamlined version of its popular 360-degree action camera that promises flagship features in a more portable package. While the company touts its reduced weight as a major selling point, the actual difference may not be as dramatic as it sounds.

The Weight Question

At 165 grams (5.8 ounces), the X4 Air claims the title of Insta360’s lightest 8K 360 camera. However, it’s only 35 grams lighter than the X5 flagship and 38 grams less than the X4—roughly a 19% reduction. In practical terms, that’s barely more than an ounce, making the “ultralight” designation somewhat generous. Still, every gram counts for creators who spend hours with cameras mounted on helmets, selfie sticks, or drones.

A Middle-Ground Approach

The X4 Air occupies an interesting position in Insta360’s lineup, sitting between the X4 and the premium X5. It features dual Type 1/1.8 sensors—larger than the X4’s but smaller than the X5’s impressive Type 1/1.28 sensors. This compromise allows for improved image quality over the X4 while maintaining a more compact form factor than the flagship model.

“Where X5 is engineered for precision, X4 Air is made for freedom,” Insta360 explains, positioning the new camera as the travel-friendly option for creators who prioritize portability over absolute image quality.

Smart Improvements

The X4 Air’s most significant upgrade comes through software rather than hardware. AdaptiveTone, Insta360’s intelligent exposure algorithm, analyzes light from both lenses independently to balance brightness and color across the entire 360-degree image. This feature protects highlight and shadow detail, potentially eliminating hours of color grading work.

The camera shoots 8K30 360-degree video and introduces 8K resolution support in Active HDR mode—an improvement over the X5’s 5.7K60 limitation for HDR footage. Additional features include Portrait Mode with automatic face detection, enhanced night mode for low-light performance, and the company’s signature FlowState Stabilization and 360° Horizon Lock.

Built to Last

Durability receives meaningful attention in the X4 Air. Following the X5’s lead, it features user-replaceable lenses with ultra-hard optical coating that doubles drop resistance compared to the X4. The camera is waterproof to 15 meters (49 feet) without requiring a separate housing, making it suitable for water sports and rainy adventures.

Practical conveniences include Twist to Shoot (start recording by twisting the selfie stick), gesture control for hands-free operation, and voice commands. The Insta360 app simplifies editing with AI-powered tools that can transform raw 360 footage into polished clips in minutes.

Pricing and Availability

The Insta360 X4 Air launches today in Graphite Black and Arctic White. The Standard Bundle costs $400, while the Starter Bundle—which includes a 14cm Invisible Selfie Stick, lens cap, and extra battery—runs $440. Both bundles include a complimentary one-year Insta360+ subscription with 200GB of cloud storage.

For creators seeking an entry point into 360 photography or those wanting flagship features without flagship bulk, the X4 Air presents a compelling option. Just don’t expect it to feel dramatically lighter in your backpack.
