Best Portrait Lenses for Hasselblad X2D II 100C
The Hasselblad X2D II 100C is the first X body with AF-C and LiDAR. That matters for portraits: a 100 MP file of a moving face is a miss if the lens cannot run continuous AF. Hasselblad’s own AF-C list is short, firmware-locked, and dead on the electronic shutter. The 2026 portrait prime they still sell as “fast portrait / close-up” is the XCD 2,5/90V — 90 mm on the 43.8 × 32.9 mm sensor, 71 mm full-frame equivalent, f/2.5, leaf shutter to 1/4000 s. Do not default to the old XCD 3,2/90 or the XCD 1,9/80 because a first-gen X2D shopping list said so; neither is on the II AF-C sheet.

Hasselblad NA store prices for 90V / 55V / 75P as of this writing. Equivalents are Hasselblad’s 24×36 numbers, not a 0.79 blog rounding. AF-C requires current lens firmware and the mechanical leaf shutter.
How We Picked These Lenses
- What the X2D II 100C actually is: 100 MP BSI, 43.8 × 32.9 mm, 0.78× vs 24×36 (Hasselblad prints 71 mm-e on the 90V, 43 mm-e on the 55V, 59 mm-e on the 75P). AF-C + LiDAR + 425 PDAF zones; first-gen X2D was AF-S only. IBIS 5-axis, 10-stop centre / 8-stop edges, CIPA with the XCD 3,5/120 Macro — that is a stills number, not a reason to hang the 120 as a portrait default. No video. Leaf flash sync at all mechanical speeds; electronic shutter kills flash and AF-C.
- Hasselblad’s AF-C FAQ (and Capture Integration’s firmware note): AF-C on XCD 2,8-4/35-100E, 2,5/38V, 2,5/55V, 2,5/25V, 2,5/90V, 4/28P, 3,4/75P, latest lens firmware, not with electronic shutter. Forum copy of Hasselblad support: this will not be turned on for other lenses later. CI’s lens pack for the V/P set is firmware 1.9.7 class on 25V / 28P / 38V / 55V / 75P / 90V. Older XCD 21 / 30 / 45 / 65 / 80 / 90 / 120 / 135 stay on the 0.6.x line and AF-S.
- The box Hasselblad labels “portrait”: NA store: 90V $4,299, “Fast Portrait Lens,” 551 g, 72 mm, 0.67 m, 1:5.8, nine elements / six groups, 1/4000 s leaf, 11% lighter than XCD 3,2/90. 55V $3,699, documentary / full or half-length, 372 g, 0.45 m. 75P $2,299, “Lightweight Portrait,” 398 g, 59 mm-e, 1/2000 s leaf, 45% lighter than XCD 2,8/65. 35-100E is the AF-C zoom that actually reaches a short-tele long end. 20-35E does not get AF-C. Third-party adapters are e-shutter only.

Hasselblad XCD 2,5/90V View on Amazon View on B&H
| SKU | XCD 2,5/90V (CP.HB.00000746.01 class). Not XCD 3,2/90. Not 90 mm HC on an XH converter as the default. |
|---|---|
| Hasselblad sheet | 71 mm (24×36). f/2.5–32. 34° / 28° / 21°. 95 × 75 mm, 551 g without caps/shade. 72 mm filter. 0.67 m. 1:5.8. 9/6 with 1 aspherical + ED. |
| On X2D II | AF-C list. Custom control ring. Mechanical shutter only for AF-C and for flash. Human / animal / vehicle detection in AF-C. |
| Street | $4,299 NA store. 72 mm filters — same thread as 38V / 55V / 25V / 75P / 28P. |
Why it fits the X2D II 100C. Hasselblad did not rename this lens for the II; they added AF-C to the body and put this glass on the compatible list. 71 mm-e is a short tele on 4:3, not an 85 mm-e headshot machine — you step in. f/2.5 on 44×33 is the look they sell as bokeh; DoF compared with 24×36 is closer to ~f/2 at the same framing, while exposure is still f/2.5. The 1/4000 s leaf is the daylight-flash number the 75P’s 1/2000 s does not match. Update the lens. If AF-C is grey, you are on electronic shutter or old firmware, not on a broken 90V.
Skip this if the job is full-length in a room — 55V. Skip it if $2,299 and 59 mm-e is the brief — 75P. Skip a used 3,2/90 sold as “the same 90.”

Hasselblad XCD 2,5/55V View on Amazon View on B&H
| SKU | XCD 2,5/55V. V-series, 72 mm, control ring. Not XCD 4/45P (36 mm-e, f/4, not the same job). |
|---|---|
| Hasselblad sheet | 43 mm (24×36). f/2.5–32. 53° / 43° / 32°. 72 × 76 mm, 372 g. 0.45 m. 1:6.4. 9 elements / 8 groups. |
| On X2D II | AF-C list. Same custom-ring story as 90V / 38V / 35-100E. $3,699 NA — $600 under the 90V, not a cheap P. |
| Portrait use | Hasselblad: full or half-length, documentary, still life. 43 mm-e is a normal, not a 90. |
Why it fits the X2D II 100C. A 90V makes a tight head. A 55V keeps the room. On the II that is an AF-C difference, not just a crop: walking subjects, kids, a couple stepping through a doorway. 372 g on an 840 g body (with battery) is why this is the V people leave mounted. Same 72 mm caps as the 90V. Minimum 0.45 m is the closer working distance. It is Value here because it is the second portrait distance on the AF-C sheet at a lower store price than the 90V — not because it is a budget lens.
Skip this if you only shoot heads — 90V. Skip 45P as a “cheap 55.” Skip it as a 50 mm-e; Hasselblad prints 43 mm.
- AF-C, f/2.5, 372 g
- Half-length without backing into a wall
- 72 mm shared with 90V
- Still $3,699
- Not a short tele

Hasselblad XCD 3,4/75P View on Amazon View on B&H
| SKU | XCD 3,4/75P. P-series. Not XCD 2,8/65. Not 75 mm HC. |
|---|---|
| Hasselblad sheet | 59 mm (24×36). f/3.4–32. 40° / 32° / 25°. 76 × 75 mm, 398 g (45% lighter / 24% shorter than XCD 2,8/65). 72 mm. 10/10, 1 aspheric + 3 ED. Leaf to 1/2000 s, flash at all speeds. |
| On X2D II | AF-C list. No second V control ring. $2,299 NA. |
| Portrait use | Hasselblad: full-length and half-length, street, still life. 59 mm-e sits between the 55V and the 90V. |
Why it fits the X2D II 100C. It is the cheap way onto the AF-C portrait list. f/3.4 is a stop behind the V primes; DoF vs 24×36 is roughly an f/2.7 look at the same framing, and exposure is still f/3.4. 1/2000 s leaf is enough for most fill; it is not the 90V’s 1/4000 s. 398 g and 72 mm mean it hangs like a P, not like the 1 kg 80/1.9. Update firmware or AF-C stays grey. If you wanted f/1.9 more than AF-C, that is a different (and officially unsupported) purchase.
Skip this if you can fund the 90V and you shoot heads. Skip a 65 mm XCD as the “same 75.”
- On the AF-C list at $2,299
- 398 g, 72 mm
- 59 mm-e is a usable portrait normal
- f/3.4, 1/2000 s leaf
- P build, no V control ring

If You Need Something Else
These are not cheaper 90Vs. One is the AF-C zoom that actually reaches short tele. One is the fastest XCD still sold used — and it does not get AF-C on the II.
Hasselblad XCD 2,8-4/35-100E View on Amazon View on B&H
| Need | One lens from ~28 mm-e to ~78 mm-e with AF-C. Long end is f/4. |
|---|---|
| Not this | XCD 3,5-4,5/35-75 (old zoom, not on the AF-C FAQ). XCD 3,2-4,5/20-35E (Hasselblad did not grant AF-C). |
| On X2D II | Named on the AF-C list. CI notes a body-firmware fix for occasional AF miss after standby with this zoom — use current body + lens firmware. |
At 100 mm you are near a 90V’s field of view and a stop slower. Weight is a zoom’s weight. Buy it when the kit is one lens and a walking subject, not when you want f/2.5 heads. The NA II bundle with 35-100E exists because this is the AF-C walkaround, not because it replaces a 90V on a stand.
Skip this if you already own 38V + 90V. Skip 20-35E as an AF-C portrait zoom — it is not on the list.

Hasselblad XCD 1,9/80 View on Amazon View on B&H
| Look | ~63 mm-e, f/1.9, ~1,044 g, 77 mm filters. Still the aperture king. |
|---|---|
| X2D II | Not on the AF-C FAQ. Hasselblad support: other lenses will not gain AF-C later. AF-S + LiDAR still work; Continuous AF does not. |
| Vs 90V | Shallower DoF, heavier, different filter, no custom V ring, no AF-C. 90V is the II portrait default. |
Own it for studio AF-S and the f/1.9 look. Do not buy it in 2026 as the lens that “unlocks” the II’s new AF-C. Same skip for XCD 3,2/90, 2,8/135, and 3,5/120 Macro as everyday people-lenses: the 120 is the IBIS test optic, not the AF-C portrait.
Skip this if the reason you bought the II was subject detection on a walking face — that is the 90V / 55V / 75P / 35-100E set.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which portrait XCD lenses do AF-C on the X2D II 100C?
Hasselblad: 35-100E, 38V, 55V, 25V, 90V, 28P, 75P, latest lens firmware, mechanical shutter only. For portraits that is 90V, 55V, 75P, and the long end of 35-100E. 80/1.9, 90/3.2, 120 Macro, 135, 20-35E are outside that list.
What is the full-frame equivalent of the 90V?
Hasselblad prints 71 mm (24×36). The 55V is 43 mm-e; the 75P is 59 mm-e. Crop is ~0.78× on 43.8 × 32.9 mm. DoF at the same framing is shallower than those millimetres suggest; exposure aperture does not change.
Can AF-C run on the electronic shutter?
No. FAQ: AF-C is not available with electronic shutter. Flash is also mechanical-only. Silent shooting is AF-S or MF.
Does the XCD 80/1.9 get AF-C by firmware later?
Hasselblad’s position, as relayed on the Medium Format Forum from support: it cannot be enabled for other lenses through future firmware. Treat 80/1.9 as AF-S on the II.
Can adapted Canon, Nikon, or Sony lenses do portraits with AF-C?
Third-party adapters on X2D II are e-shutter only. E-shutter disables AF-C and flash. For II portraits, native XCD on the AF-C list is the path. H / V / XPan glass needs Hasselblad’s own converters and still is not the AF-C FAQ set.
Final Verdict
For most Hasselblad X2D II 100C portrait kits, buy the XCD 2,5/90V, update its firmware, and stay on the leaf shutter so AF-C and flash both exist. Need the room in the frame? 55V. Need AF-C without a second V-series invoice? 75P. The 35-100E is the AF-C zoom to ~78 mm-e. Leave the 80/1.9 and the old 90/3.2 for AF-S studio work. Electronic shutter is not a portrait mode on this body.
