Best Microphones for Nikon Z9

The Nikon Z9 records 8K and N-RAW through the same analog hole every other Z body uses: a 3.5 mm stereo mini-pin jack with switchable plug-in power. The accessory shoe is ISO 518 with sync and data contacts for flash — not the Nikon multi-accessory digital-audio shoe on the ZR, and not Sony’s MI shoe. Headphones are a second, dedicated 3.5 mm jack; the remote is the ten-pin terminal (MC‑30A / MC‑36A), so monitoring is not shared with a cable release. RØDE’s VideoMic NTG is the on-camera shotgun that uses that stack: its own gain dial, a −20 dB safety channel, and auto-sensing TRS into the camera. Walk away from the body and skip the shotgun — buy a camera-kit wireless with a 3.5 mm receiver.

Who should buy what

  • Talking to the lens, seated, or B-roll: VideoMic NTG. Gain and safety channel live on the mic. Watch the Z9 meters; record NEV or MOV for 24-bit PCM. Plug-in power OFF — the NTG has its own cell.
  • You or talent walks off camera, or two voices: DJI Mic Mini 2 camera kit (2 TX + 1 RX + case). Clip the transmitters. Run the included 3.5 mm TRS into the mic jack. Monitor on the camera’s dedicated headphone jack.
  • Replace the built-in mics with no battery to charge: VideoMic GO II Helix. Plug-in power ON. Camera sets the level.
  • Shorter shotgun, AAA, fur in the box: MKE 400 II. Not Overall — no continuously variable gain, no safety channel, street price near the NTG. The Z9 already has headphones, so the jack on the Sennheiser is a spare, not a workaround.
  • Skip as a new Z9 buy: Sony MI-shoe mics and the DJI Sony camera adapter (ISO 518 analog shoe). USB mics into camera USB-C. DJI Mobile RX-only kits (no 3.5 mm). Nikon ME‑1 as a ~$180 stereo mic with no gain dial. Nikon ME‑W1 Bluetooth as a “pro” lav. Tascam CA‑XLR2d digital via CA‑AK1‑N (that shoe is ZR-class; Tascam lists Z9 as analog 3.5 mm + battery box only). Wireless GO II unless transmitter onboard files are the point — that job is DJI Mic 3. Deity V-Mic D4 Duo from the old page (a dual-capsule vlog stick on a 1.3 kg flagship). A VideoMicro as the default on this body.

N-RAW, ProRes, and H.265 do not change the jack. The camera still takes analog 3.5 mm and writes Linear PCM only when the file type is NEV or MOV.

How We Picked These Microphones

  • Z9 I/O is analog, with two separate 3.5 mm jacks: Nikon spec: stereo mini-pin audio input (3.5 mm; plug-in power supported) and a stereo mini-pin audio output. Ten-pin remote terminal for MC‑30A / MC‑36A — not a shared headphone/remote jack like Z5 II / Z50 II. Accessory shoe: ISO 518 with sync and data contacts and a safety lock. HDMI is Type A. USB-C is SuperSpeed data; Nikon recommends the built-in USB port. Video menu includes microphone sensitivity, attenuator, frequency response, wind noise reduction, [Mic jack plug-in power], headphone volume. Nikon: turn plug-in power OFF on mics that do not need it, to avoid supply noise. Wind noise reduction: Nikon NPS — [ON] is a low-cut on the built-in mics; it has no effect on optional stereo microphones. Put a deadcat on the capsule instead.
  • What the camera actually records: Linear PCM 48 kHz / 24-bit in NEV and MOV; AAC 48 kHz / 16-bit in MP4. Built-in stereo still exists for scratch, with an attenuator and adjustable sensitivity. USB-C is not a USB microphone input. Nikon’s own accessory list is ME‑1 on the 3.5 mm jack and ME‑W1 Bluetooth. Third-party mini-jack mics are the rest of this page. Tascam’s CA‑XLR2d camera list marks Z9 analog-only (3.5 mm + battery box, manual mic volume); digital shoe power is not this body.
  • Hero SKUs from the makers, not a fake lab: RØDE VideoMic NTG (VMNTG): supercardioid, annular line tube as on NTG5, equivalent noise 15 dB SPL A-weighted, variable gain, pad, 75/150 Hz HPF, HF boost, safety channel, auto-sensing 3.5 mm, USB-C 24-bit/48 kHz, 94 g, 350 mAh, 30+ hours. RØDE VideoMic GO II Helix: 33 g mic / 89 g with Helix kit, 3.5 mm TRS plus USB-C, plug-in power 2–5 V, no battery; DSP (HPF/pad) is USB + RØDE Central, not on the analog camera feed. DJI Mic Mini 2: camera-kit RX OUT is analog 3.5 mm; the Sony MI-shoe adapter is Sony-only digital 24-bit. Buy 2 TX + 1 camera RX, not Mobile RX. DJI’s 400 m / 48-hour-with-case figures are line-of-sight lab numbers. DJI Mic 3 (2 TX + 1 RX + Charging Case): 32 GB per TX, dual-file 32-bit float internal recording (DJI: 32-bit float dual-file ~21.5 h), timecode, TX ~8 h / RX ~10 h / case ~28 h, locking 3.5 mm TRS to the camera. Transmitters have no 3.5 mm lav jack (unlike Mic 2). Offload via the case, not a USB port on the TX. Sony MI adapter is still Sony-only. The previous version of this page led with NTG (keep) plus Wireless GO II, MKE 400, Deity D4 Duo, and VideoMicro. Wireless GO II is no longer Value; D4 Duo is not a Z9 default.

Why it is Overall on a Z9. 8K and N-RAW do not add a digital audio bus. The useful controls are analog 3.5 mm plus the camera’s sensitivity/attenuator. The NTG puts a real gain dial and a −20 dB safety channel on that cable, so camera sensitivity can sit lower and preamp hiss stays down. Auto-sensing 3.5 mm means the included cable talks TRS to the Z9 without a TRRS adapter. Peak LED on the mic. Auto on/off with the camera is in RØDE’s feature list. USB-C is for voiceover on a laptop — the Z9 USB-C port will not see it as a mic. Leave [Mic jack plug-in power] OFF; the NTG has its own battery. Nikon recommends that for any mic that does not need camera power. The 149 mm-tall body swallows the extra length; this is not a Z50 II Helix problem. Monitor on the dedicated headphone jack while you ride the waveform.

Skip this if the subject walks away from the camera. A supercardioid on the shoe cannot follow a lav. That job is Mini 2. Skip if you refuse to charge a 350 mAh cell — GO II Helix is plug-in power. Skip bundle ASINs stuffed with random headphones.

  • Gain and safety channel on analog 3.5 mm, which is all the Z9 has
  • 30+ hour battery; USB-C for the computer, not a second camera cable
  • Needs a deadcat outdoors (camera wind NR does not touch it)
  • Does not replace a wireless lav

DJI Mic Mini 2 (2 TX + 1 RX + Charging Case) View on Amazon View on B&H

Best For: Walk-and-talk and two-person interviews
Key Feature: Analog 3.5 mm camera RX · two-person kit
Rating: 4.5 / 5.0 ★★★★☆
Kit2 TX + 1 camera RX + charging case (not Mobile RX)

DJI claimsTX ~11.5 h · RX ~10.5 h · case ~48 h · up to 400 m LOS
StreetAbout $99–$120 depending on market (US stock is the camera RX kit, not a Sony-shoe kit)

Why it is Value here. The NTG is the better on-camera mic. Value is the job the NTG cannot do: a capsule on a person. Mini 2’s camera receiver outputs analog on 3.5 mm, which is what the Z9 mic jack wants. DJI’s Sony MI-shoe adapter is 48 kHz/24-bit digital on Sony bodies — it does not make a Nikon ISO 518 shoe digital. The old page’s Wireless GO II is still a system with transmitter onboard files; it costs more than this kit for the same clip-on walk. Buy the 2 TX + 1 RX + case with the 3.5 mm cable in the box. Headphones stay in the camera, not in a shared remote jack. Auto on/off with the camera is a Mimo-app option when the RX is on the TRS cable.

Skip this if you only talk into the lens from a chair. The NTG or GO II is simpler. Skip Mobile RX kits — DJI: the mobile receiver has no 3.5 mm camera out. Skip if you need a 32-bit float file on the transmitter; that is Mic 3, not Mini 2.

  • Two transmitters and a 3.5 mm RX at wireless-kit money
  • The analog path this Nikon actually has
  • 400 m is a line-of-sight claim; pockets and 2.4 GHz crowds eat range
  • No 32-bit float onboard like Mic 3

Why not the original VideoMicro as Budget. The old page used VideoMicro because it was tiny and free of batteries. GO II Helix still draws plug-in power from the Z9, still has no onboard battery, and adds the annular line tube plus a USB-C jack for the computer. Current kit is VMGOIIH with the HELIX isolation mount. RØDE is explicit: on analog 3.5 mm it is plug-and-go with no HPF/pad switches; those DSP options are USB + Central. Set [Microphone sensitivity] manual on the camera. Leave [Mic jack plug-in power] ON or the capsule is dead. On a 1340 g Z9 this looks small; it is the cheap way to stop using the built-in pair, not a second NTG.

Skip this if you wanted the NTG’s gain dial and safety channel on the analog feed. Skip if the talent leaves the frame — still a shotgun on the shoe. Skip original VideoMic GO (9 V, no USB).

  • Uses the Z9 plug-in-power jack Nikon documents
  • USB-C for voiceover the same afternoon
  • No analog safety channel; camera gain is the only level control
  • Foam in the box is not a deadcat

If You Need Something Else

These are not cheaper NTGs. One is a shorter shotgun that still costs NTG money. One is DJI Mic 3 — wireless with 32 GB and 32-bit float on the transmitter.

🎧 Compact shotgun, AAA

Sennheiser MKE 400 II View on Amazon View on B&H

SKU / ASIN508898 · B09Q89JQBF
PatternSupercardioid · 3-step sensitivity · low-cut
MonitorHeadphone jack on the mic with volume — redundant on a Z9, useful if the camera jack is occupied by something else
Power2× AAA or plug-in power · auto on/off with camera

The old page sold this as a Z9 shotgun alternative. It still works: 3.5 mm TRS, furry windshield in the box, AAA if you do not want another USB cell. It is not Overall — no continuously variable gain, no safety channel, and street price sits near the NTG. On Z5 II the reason to buy it was a remote stealing the headphone jack. The Z9 does not have that conflict (ten-pin remote, dedicated phones). Buy MKE 400 II only if you want the shorter body and alkaline power.

Skip this if you are shopping new and can have the NTG — same analog jack, better controls.

💾 Wireless with a file on the TX

DJI Mic 3 (2 TX + 1 RX) View on Amazon View on B&H

KitDJI Mic 3 (2 TX + 1 RX + Charging Case). Camera kit with locking 3.5 mm TRS, not Mobile RX, not the Sony MI adapter.
Why not ValueDJI store $329 for the two-TX case kit vs Mini 2 camera kit money. Street often $250–$329.
Z9Still analog 3.5 mm from the RX. Camera file is 24-bit PCM in NEV/MOV, not the TX’s 32-bit float. Plug-in power OFF.
Onboard32 GB per TX. Dual-file 32-bit float (DJI: ~21.5 h dual-file / ~43 h single-file). Timecode on the system. TX ~8 h, RX ~10 h, case ~28 h (DJI, ANC and internal record off, 3.5 mm to camera).
Not on the TXNo 3.5 mm lav jack. Capsule on the transmitter, or skip this kit. Dump files through the charging case, not a USB port on the TX.

The camera still records the analog feed. Mic 3 earns the extra money when dropouts or a slammed limiter would ruin an 8K take and you want a 32-bit file (and timecode) on the transmitter to sync later. Mini 2 is Value for the same 3.5 mm RX path without that recorder. This is the replacement for the old page’s Wireless GO II “onboard recording” pitch, and for Mic 2 on this URL. Four-channel / 4 TX tricks are a Sony digital-shoe or computer story — the Z9 jack is still two analog channels.

Skip this if both people stay in frame and you are not keeping a backup file — Mini 2. Skip if the workflow is a wired lav into the transmitter; Mic 3 dropped that 3.5 mm input (Mic 2 still has it).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Z9 headphone jack shared with the remote?

No. Headphones are a dedicated 3.5 mm stereo mini-pin output. The remote is the ten-pin terminal (MC‑30A / MC‑36A). That is the opposite of Z5 II / Z50 II, where one jack is headphone or MC‑DC3. You can monitor and still run a ten-pin cable.

USB microphones on the Z9

Not for in-camera recording. USB-C is SuperSpeed data (Nikon prefers the built-in port). Record USB mics on a computer. The NTG and GO II Helix are USB mics on a laptop; on the camera they go in the 3.5 mm jack.

MOV or MP4 for sound?

NEV and MOV get Linear PCM 48 kHz / 24-bit. MP4 is AAC 48 kHz / 16-bit. 8K and N-RAW do not upgrade the analog jack. If the external mic is why you opened this page, do not throw the extra bits away in MP4 unless the smaller file is required.

Should plug-in power be on?

ON for GO II Helix (and any other mic that drinks 2–5 V from the jack). OFF for the NTG and for wireless receivers that supply their own output — Nikon says unused plug-in power can add supply noise. Confirm on the mic maker’s sheet if you are unsure.

Does the Z9 have a digital audio hot shoe?

No. Nikon specifies an ISO 518 hot-shoe with sync and data contacts for flash. The Tascam CA‑XLR2d digital Nikon adapter (CA‑AK1‑N) is for the multi-accessory shoe on bodies such as ZR. Tascam’s tested list marks Z9 analog: 3.5 mm cable, battery box, manual mic volume. An XLR boom still works that analog way; it is not a cable-free digital shoe.

The Z9 is analog 3.5 mm with plug-in power, 24-bit PCM in NEV/MOV, a dedicated headphone jack, and a ten-pin remote. There is no digital audio shoe. VideoMic NTG is Overall for talking to the camera. Mini 2 camera kit is Value when people walk. GO II Helix is Budget plug-in power. MKE 400 II is a shorter AAA shotgun, not a headphone workaround. Mic 3 is the wireless with 32 GB / 32-bit float on the transmitter. Do not buy Sony MI mics, USB mics, or a digital Tascam shoe for this body.
