The Canon EOS R8 is a 24.2-megapixel full-frame body with uncropped 4K60, Canon Log 3, and no in-body stabilization. There is no internal ND. RF 24–50 kit glass is 58 mm; the walkaround 24–105mm F4–7.1 IS STM is 67 mm. The 2026 first buy is the PolarPro Peter McKinnon Edition II Variable ND 2–5 Stop in 67 mm — not the R6 Mark II’s 82 mm F2.8 kit.

Who should buy what

  • Default R8 (24–105 STM, ISO 100, 4K24–60 709): PolarPro 2–5 67 mm — no IBIS, not the R6 II 82 mm kit.
  • Shade / slow STM zoom: NiSi 1–5 67 mm.
  • First 67 mm under $80: K&F KF01.1802V1.
  • C-Log3 noon on an f/1.8 prime, or RF 24–70 F2.8: PolarPro 6–9 67 mm or 82 mm 2–5 in Layer 2.
  • Skip: Treating this like a C70 with internal ND. Copying the R6 Mark II 82 mm Overall. Software ND. Using a gimbal as a substitute for stops (it is not).

How We Picked

Three official facts decide the glass. Everything else is a pairing.

  • No IBIS, no built-in ND. EOS R8 is a compact RF body. Stabilization is lens IS only. Neutral density is glass on the lens. (Canon Europe EOS R8 specifications)
  • Canon Log 3, 4K60, 10-bit in Log/HDR PQ. Canon documents C-Log3 and 4K up to 59.94p. Stills ISO starts at 100. Log changes the movie ISO table (footnote 10). (Canon Europe R8: Canon Log 3 / ISO notes)
  • RF 24–105 STM is 67 mm; RF 24–50 is 58 mm. PolarPro Edition II skips 58 mm. 67 mm is the first PolarPro. 82 mm is the F2.8 L path — the R6 Mark II article, not this default. (PolarPro Edition II thread sizes)

Thread67 mm
Best forISO 100 stills + 4K24–60 Canon 709 on STM zooms

R8 ND is 67 mm because the body has no IBIS and the usual zoom is 24–105 STM, not RF 24–70 F2.8.

Canon UK: 24.2MP full-frame, Dual Pixel AF, Canon Log 3, 4K up to 59.94p, 10-bit when Log/HDR PQ is on, stills ISO 100–102400 (L 50 / H 204800). Movie ISO tables change when Log is on (Canon’s footnote 10). There is no IBIS — Image Stabilizer in the display list is lens IS. Weight is about 461 g. There is no built-in ND.

The R6 Mark II article starts on 82 mm because that body is sold with F2.8 L zooms. The R8 is sold with RF 24–50 (58 mm) and commonly paired with RF 24–105 STM (67 mm). PolarPro Edition II skips 58 mm. 67 mm 2–5 plus a 58→67 step-up on the kit zoom is the first kit. At ISO 100, f/4–7.1, 1/50, a 2–5 still covers daylight 709. C-Log3 noon on a faster RF prime is Layer 2’s 6–9.

No IBIS means 180° shutter is the video stabilizer. The filter is not optional on a gimbal-free sidewalk.

  • 67 mm matches RF 24–105 STM — the actual R8 walkaround
  • 2–5 matches ISO 100 stills and 4K24–60 709
  • Hard stops when there is no IBIS to hide a bad shutter
  • RF 24–70 F2.8 is 82 mm — a second ring if that L zoom arrives later
  • C-Log3 hard noon on an f/1.8 prime still wants 6–9

Best forCanon 709 shade, STM zoom

True Color 1–5 in 67 mm when 2 stops is already too dark at f/7.1 on the STM zoom.

RF 24–105 STM is slow at the long end. A 2-stop PolarPro in open shade can force ISO up on a body that already lacks IBIS. NiSi’s 1-stop floor is the Value pick for 709 interviews. Same 67 mm thread.

  • 1-stop floor on a slow STM zoom
  • True Color
  • 67 mm
  • Lever vs STM hood
  • F2.8 L zooms still want 82 mm

Best forFirst 67 mm on RF 24–105 STM

Cheap 67 mm ND2–32. Confirm KF01.1802V1. The R6 Mark II budget 82 mm SKU is the wrong first R8 buy.

KF01.1802V1 is 67 mm Nano-X ND2–32. Stay off the last ½ stop. RF 24–50 is 58 mm (KF01.1449V1) if that kit zoom never comes off. Do not start on KF01.1805V1 82 mm unless an F2.8 L zoom is already the A-lens.

  • Correct 67 mm ND2–32
  • Matches STM walkaround
  • No hard stops
  • 58 mm kit zoom is a different SKU

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the R8 have IBIS?

No. Lens IS only. That is why 180° shutter plus ND matters more here than on the R6 Mark II.

Does it have C-Log2 like the R5 Mark II?

Canon documents Canon Log 3 on the R8, not C-Log2. Do not copy the R5 II 6–9 Overall unless Log noon is every clip.

Why 67 mm instead of 82 mm?

RF 24–105 STM is 67 mm and is the usual R8 zoom. 82 mm is F2.8 L glass — the R6 Mark II default.

Does it have a built-in ND?

No. Internal ND is Cinema EOS. The R8 needs a filter on the RF lens.

Will an R6 Mark II 82 mm PolarPro fit RF 24–105 STM?

Only with a step-down (vignette). Buy 67 mm for this zoom.

Is 4K60 cropped?

Canon lists uncropped 4K/60p on this body. The crop-free readout is not extra ND.

The R8 is a 24MP full-frame hybrid with 4K60, C-Log3, no IBIS, and no internal ND. Start with PolarPro 2–5 67 mm for RF 24–105 STM. Use NiSi 1–5 67 mm in shade. Use K&F KF01.1802V1 as the cheap 67 mm. Move to 82 mm only when an F2.8 L zoom becomes the A-lens. Do not copy the R6 Mark II Overall.
