Best Monitor for Sony a7S III

The a7S III help guide lists an HDMI Type-A jack. With RAW off and the card not recording, the 4K HDMI menu includes 60p 10bit. A monitor that stops at 4K30 misses that line. Sony’s separate 16-bit RAW stream is for a recorder, not for this choice. The Atomos Shinobi 7 RX lists 4K UHD through 59.94p and 60p, at 8-bit or 10-bit. Check Atomos Shinobi 7 RX on Amazon.

Who should buy what

  • Watch the 60p 10bit HDMI picture: Atomos Shinobi 7 RX. Its 4K UHD list includes 59.94p and 60p.
  • 4K30 or 1080p60 is enough: Atomos Shinobi II. $420 less on the product-page figures.
  • Lowest list price in this set: Atomos Shinobi GO. Series MSRP $249, same 4K30 ceiling.
  • Record the 16-bit RAW stream: none of these three. Sony sends that signal to a RAW-compatible recorder, at 4264 × 2408.

How We Picked

The test is the camera’s non-RAW 4K HDMI menu, not the 16-bit RAW stream. A monitor that cannot list 4K at 60p is not the match for that menu.

  • The camera. The ILCE-7SM3 specifications list an HDMI Type-A jack. With RAW off and HDMI-only output, 4K Output Set lists 60p 10bit, 50p 10bit, 30p 10bit, 25p 10bit, and 24p 10bit. RAW output is a separate 4264 × 2408 stream at 60p, 50p, 30p, 25p, or 24p, and Sony says it goes to a RAW-compatible device. RAW cannot be recorded on the camera’s card.
  • Which monitor lists 4K60. The Shinobi 7 RX product page lists HDMI 2.0, 4K UHD at 23.98 through 60p, and 8-bit or 10-bit 4:2:2. The Shinobi II and Shinobi GO product pages list HDMI 1.4, 4K UHD only through 30p, and 1080p through 60p. The GO page also says no DCI 4K.
  • Prices are not one column. The RX product page lists $799, and the Shinobi series page lists an MSRP of $699 excluding sales taxes and USA tariffs. The II product page lists $379. The series page lists the GO at $249 on that same MSRP line. Gaps below use $799, $379, and $249: $420 and $130.

Why it fits the a7S III. The camera’s HDMI-only 4K menu includes 60p 10bit and 50p 10bit. This monitor’s 4K UHD list includes 59.94p, 50p, and 60p, and the input is specified as 8-bit or 10-bit 4:2:2. The body jack is HDMI Type-A, and this monitor uses a full-size HDMI input, so the cable Sony asks for is a Premium High Speed HDMI cable, not a micro-HDMI adapter. Sony does not print a 4:2:2 line in the HDMI menu used here. The match is the 60p 10bit menu item against a monitor that lists both 60p and 10-bit.

It is not the RAW recorder. Sony’s RAW page sends 4264 × 2408 to a RAW-compatible device, and this product is a monitor. The 3G-SDI port does nothing for a camera that only has HDMI. Wireless receive, where the series page lists it, is from an Atomos TX at up to 4Kp30 or 1080p60. The camera does not include that transmitter. The older Shinobi 7 page says that model is no longer available and points to this one.

PriceProduct page $379. That is $420 under the RX product-page $799

Why it fits the a7S III. The camera can send 30p 10bit, 25p 10bit, and 24p 10bit on the HDMI-only 4K menu, and this monitor lists 4K UHD at 23.98, 24, 25, and 29.97/30. It also lists 1080p through 60p, which covers the cases where Sony drops the HDMI picture to 1080. It does not list 4K at 50p or 60p. The 60p 10bit item in the camera menu is outside this HDMI 1.4 list.

The $420 gap is real on the two product pages. Buy it when the shoot is 4K30 or 1080p60. Skip it when the HDMI-only setting stays on 60p 10bit or 50p 10bit. It also does not record RAW. The product page calls the panel 5-inch. A different Atomos page has called related 5-inch models 5.2-inch, so this article uses the figure on this product page only.

Battery noteSeries page lists the NP-F battery as purchased separately
PriceSeries MSRP $249 excluding sales taxes and USA tariffs. $130 under the $379 II, $550 under the $799 RX

Why it fits the a7S III. The HDMI list matches the II on the point that matters for this body: 4K UHD stops at 30p, and 1080p continues through 60p. It can show the camera’s 30p, 25p, and 24p 10bit HDMI-only settings, and the 1080 picture Sony falls back to in some log setups. It cannot show 4K at 60p. The product page also says there is no DCI 4K support. The camera’s RAW size, 4264 × 2408, is not a DCI monitoring mode on this screen anyway, because this monitor does not take that RAW stream.

The series price is $249, $130 under the II. That is the budget case. The screen size is not one number: the product page says 5.2-inch and the series page says 5-inch. Buy it for 4K30 or 1080p60 at the lower list price. Do not buy it to watch 60p 4K, and do not buy it to record RAW.

If You Need Something Else

These three monitors can show a normal HDMI picture. They are not the device Sony describes for RAW. The RAW page says to connect the HDMI Type-A jack to an external RAW recorder with a Premium High Speed HDMI cable. The image size is 4264 × 2408, and the frame-rate menu is 60p, 50p, 30p, 25p, or 24p. RAW cannot be recorded on the camera’s own card. Gamma is locked to S-Log3 during RAW output, and Active SteadyShot cannot be used while that stream is going out. A monitor that only lists 4K UHD and 1080p does not become that recorder by using a faster HDMI cable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What HDMI jack the a7S III has

The specifications page lists an HDMI Type-A jack. Sony’s RAW and 4K notes both say to use a Premium High Speed HDMI cable, sold separately.

What the non-RAW 4K HDMI menu lists

With the card not recording and RAW off, 4K Output Set lists 60p 10bit, 50p 10bit, 30p 10bit, 25p 10bit, and 24p 10bit. While the card is recording and RAW is off, Output Resolution lists Auto, 2160p, 1080p, and 1080i.

Why a log picture can come out of HDMI as 1080

Sony says that if Log Shooting is not Off, HDMI output resolution becomes 1080, except when recording is HDMI-only or RAW output is on. In those two cases the video is output in 4K. Picture profiles PPLUT1 through PPLUT4 follow the same note.

Whether these monitors record the 16-bit RAW output

No. Sony sends RAW at 4264 × 2408 to a RAW-compatible recorder. The three products here are monitors. Their frame lists are UHD, and on two of them DCI, plus HD. None of those lists is a RAW recorder.

What 60p means on the $379 and $249 monitors

1080p through 60p, and 1080i at 50i or 60i. Their 4K UHD lists stop at 30p. The camera’s 60p 10bit and 50p 10bit 4K settings are outside those lists.

The a7S III’s HDMI-only 4K menu includes 60p 10bit, and the Shinobi 7 RX is the monitor here that lists 4K UHD at 59.94p and 60p in 10-bit. The Shinobi II is $420 less and stops 4K at 30p. The Shinobi GO is the $249 series price with that same 30p ceiling and no DCI 4K. None of the three records the 4264 × 2408 RAW output.
