PetaPixel’s hands-on of the Nikon Z5 IIC reports a microphone jack and a headphone jack on the body. The vari-angle screen and the REC lamp are there for a camera that is already recording video. The DJI Mic Mini 2 sends that jack a 3.5 mm TRS feed from a receiver, and the transmitter weighs about 11 g. Check DJI Mic Mini 2 on Amazon.

How We Picked

The jack is reported on the body. The three microphones are the ones with a 3.5 mm path into a camera.

  • This body has a microphone jack and a headphone jack. PetaPixel, September 23, 2026, from a hands-on of the Z5 IIC. Nikon’s September 24, 2026 announcement adds a 3.2-inch vari-angle monitor, a REC lamp, and a red frame on the monitor while recording. It does not publish a jack diameter. The microphones below are specified by their makers as 3.5 mm.
  • The wireless kit uses DJI’s 3.5 mm camera cable. DJI Mic Mini 2 specifications: transmitter about 11 g excluding the magnet clip, receiver about 17.8 g including the interface cover, 120 dB SPL at 1% THD, frequency response 20 Hz–20 kHz with the low cut off. DJI’s runtime note measures the set with the receiver on a camera through the 3.5 mm TRS camera cable.
  • The two on-camera mics are 3.5 mm and light. Rode VideoMicro II user guide: 80 mm long, 39 g including the shock mount, 3.5 mm TRS output, powered from the camera input through the included TRS cable. Sennheiser MKE 200 product specification v1.1: 48 g, 69×60×39 mm, supercardioid, 40–20,000 Hz, 120 dB SPL, plug-in power 2–10 V, locking 3.5 mm jack.

Detailed Reviews

🏆 Best Overall

DJI Mic Mini 2 View on Amazon View on B&H

Best For: A mic that is not on the camera
Key Feature: 3.5 mm TRS to the camera · transmitter about 11 g
Rating: 4.8 / 5.0 ★★★★★
TransmitterAbout 28.58×28.04×13.52 mm · about 11 g
ReceiverAbout 46.50×29.61×19.32 mm · about 17.8 g
To the camera3.5 mm TRS camera cable, per DJI’s measurement note
Level and band120 dB SPL · 20 Hz–20 kHz with low cut off

Why it fits the Z5 IIC. PetaPixel reports a microphone jack on this body. DJI’s Mic Mini 2 receiver uses a 3.5 mm TRS camera cable, so the jack is the input and the transmitter does not have to sit on the camera. The transmitter is about 11 g. On a 620 g body that is already being held out toward a vari-angle screen, the mass stays off the shoe. The capsule is omnidirectional, with a stated 120 dB SPL.

Buy it when the voice is away from the camera, including a product held up to the lens. Skip it when one short shotgun on the camera is enough. That is the VideoMicro II, and it draws power from the jack instead of a transmitter battery.

💎 Best Value

Rode VideoMicro II View on Amazon View on B&H

Best For: A light shotgun on the camera
Key Feature: 80 mm · 39 g with the shock mount · 3.5 mm TRS
Rating: 4.5 / 5.0 ★★★★☆
Size and weight80 mm long · 39 g including the shock mount
Output3.5 mm TRS · included TRS-to-TRS cable
PowerFrom the camera microphone input, per Rode’s guide
Also in the boxA TRRS cable for a phone, not for this camera

Why it fits the Z5 IIC. Rode’s guide puts the VideoMicro II at 80 mm and 39 g with the shock mount, and says the 3.5 mm TRS output both carries audio and powers the mic from the camera. That matches a body that already has a microphone jack, without a second battery. Thirty-nine grams is a small add on a 620 g camera. Use the TRS cable. The TRRS cable is the phone lead.

Buy it when the mic stays on the camera and plug-in power is acceptable. Skip it when the subject is not in front of the camera. A wireless transmitter is the Mic Mini 2.

💰 Budget Pick

Sennheiser MKE 200 View on Amazon View on B&H

Best For: A locking plug and a tighter pattern
Key Feature: Supercardioid · 48 g · locking 3.5 mm
Rating: 4.3 / 5.0 ★★★★☆
Pattern and bandSupercardioid · 40–20,000 Hz
Level120 dB SPL · equivalent noise 20 dB(A)
Power and plugPlug-in power 2–10 V · locking 3.5 mm
Size and weight69×60×39 mm · 48 g

Why it fits the Z5 IIC. Sennheiser’s v1.1 sheet lists a locking 3.5 mm TRS cable for cameras, supercardioid pickup, and plug-in power from 2 to 10 V. The mic is 48 g, close to the VideoMicro II’s 39 g, with a lock on the plug. A headphone jack is also on the body PetaPixel handled, so monitoring is a camera function, not a feature this mic has to add. The furry windshield is in the box.

Buy it when the plug should lock and the pattern should be supercardioid. Skip it if the camera jack cannot supply plug-in power. Nikon’s announcement does not publish that voltage. Rode’s mic has the same kind of dependence. The Mic Mini 2 carries its own battery.

If You Need Something Else

Nikon’s announcement does not print a jack diameter or a plug-in-power voltage. PetaPixel’s hands-on is the source for the microphone jack and the headphone jack being on the camera. If a later Nikon spec sheet lists a different connector, the 3.5 mm cables above are the part that would change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where the jack claim comes from

PetaPixel’s September 23, 2026 hands-on says the Z5 IIC has a microphone jack and a headphone jack. Nikon’s press note the next day describes the REC lamp, the vari-angle monitor, and USB streaming. It does not list the jack size.

Which cable goes into the camera

DJI specifies a 3.5 mm TRS camera cable for the Mic Mini 2 receiver. Rode includes a TRS-to-TRS cable for cameras and a TRRS cable for phones. Sennheiser includes a locking TRS cable for cameras and a TRRS cable for mobile devices. The camera lead is the TRS one.

Which mics need power from the camera

Rode says the VideoMicro II powers itself from the camera’s microphone input. Sennheiser requires 2–10 V plug-in power for the MKE 200. The Mic Mini 2 transmitter and receiver have their own battery. The 3.5 mm cable on that set carries audio.

What the headphone jack is for

PetaPixel lists it separately from the microphone jack. It is the monitoring output. None of the three microphones above is the headphone. The internal recording still has the REC lamp and the red frame Nikon describes on the monitor.

What a mic does to the gimbal load

The VideoMicro II is 39 g with its mount. The MKE 200 is 48 g. Either one on the camera adds that mass to the 620 g body. The Mic Mini 2 transmitter stays off the camera. Payload limits are in the gimbal guide for the Z5 IIC.
