Best External Monitor for Sony a7 V
The a7 V sends movie video out of a full-size HDMI Type-A jack. Sony’s specification lists 3840×2160 at 59.94p, and the HDMI Only menu includes a 60p 10-bit setting. A monitor whose HDMI input stops at 4Kp30 cannot show that line. The SmallHD Ultra 7 is rated for HDMI 4Kp60, and the 4K image is scaled onto its 1920×1200 panel. Check SmallHD Ultra 7 on Amazon.

How We Picked
Three sourced facts: what the HDMI jack can send, when that signal drops to 1080, and which monitor input is rated for 4Kp60.
- The jack is full-size HDMI, and 4K includes 59.94p. Sony’s ILCE-7M5 specification lists an HDMI connector (Type-A) and output of 3840×2160 at 59.94p, 50p, 29.97p, 25p, or 23.98p, plus 1920×1080 at 59.94p, 50p, or 23.98p, and 1920×1080 at 59.94i or 50i. The signal is YCbCr 4:2:2 10-bit or RGB 8-bit. The help guide says to use a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for 4K. The built-in monitor is a 3.2-type panel with 2,095,104 dots. That dot count is not the HDMI resolution.
- 60p 10-bit is an HDMI Only setting. With recording to the card turned off, 4K Output Set.(HDMI Only) offers 60p, 50p, 30p, 25p, or 24p, each labeled 10-bit. If Log shooting is not Off, or Picture Profile is PPLUT1 through PPLUT4, HDMI output is 1080 while the camera is also recording to the card. HDMI Only is the exception: that path outputs 4K.
- The 4Kp60 input is the Ultra 7. SmallHD rates the Ultra 7 HDMI 2.0 input at 4Kp60, on a 1920×1200 panel, at 2300 nits, and lists $3,099. Atomos lists the Ninja Ultra at $759 and recording up to 4Kp60. The Shinobi II input is up to 4Kp30, at $349. The Ultra 5 HDMI input is rated 4Kp30, at $2,249 and 3000 nits.

SmallHD Ultra 7 View on Amazon View on B&H
| Input | HDMI 2.0 in and out, rated 4Kp60. 6G-SDI is also on the monitor. This camera has no SDI jack |
|---|---|
| Panel | 7-inch, 1920×1200. A 3840×2160 signal is scaled onto that panel, not shown as a 4K display |
| Brightness and weight | 2300 nits. About 900 g. SmallHD’s product page lists IP54 |
| Price | SmallHD lists $3,099. That is $2,340 above the Ninja Ultra’s $759 |
Why it fits the Sony a7 V. The specification includes 3840×2160/59.94p, and the HDMI Only menu includes 60p 10-bit. This input is rated for that class of signal. The panel is 1920×1200, so the 4K frame is scaled. Sony’s YCbCr 4:2:2 10-bit line is the signal. This article does not treat it as a RAW feed. The SDI port stays unused. A Premium High Speed HDMI cable is what Sony asks for when the output is 4K. If Log shooting is on and the camera is also writing to the card, the help guide drops HDMI to 1080 until Rec. Media dur HDMI Output is set to Off (HDMI Only).
Buy it when the 59.94p 4K line has to appear on the monitor and 2300 nits is the brightness. Skip it when the camera will stay at 30p, 25p, or 24p 10-bit. Those rates fit a 4Kp30 input.

Atomos Ninja Ultra View on Amazon View on B&H
| Record | Up to 4Kp60 in ProRes, DNx, and H.265. Atomos also lists ProRes RAW up to 6Kp30 from compatible cameras. Sony’s a7 V HDMI line is YCbCr 4:2:2 10-bit or RGB 8-bit, not a RAW output |
|---|---|
| Panel | 5.2-inch, 1920×1080, 1000 nits. 4K is scaled onto 1920×1080 |
| Price | Atomos lists $759. That is $410 above the Shinobi II’s $349, and $2,340 under the Ultra 7 |
Why it fits the Sony a7 V. It can take a 4Kp60 HDMI signal and record it, which matches the 59.94p line and the 60p 10-bit HDMI Only setting. The codec on the recorder is ProRes, DNx, or H.265. It is not ProRes RAW from this body, because the camera specification does not list a RAW HDMI output. Sony’s REC Control menu can start a recorder that supports that command, and time code output has to be On before REC Control can be set. Sony says to confirm the recorder actually starts. This page does not treat that menu as proof that this model starts from the a7 V. HDMI Only means the camera card is not recording at the same time, and the camera’s own counter does not advance.
Buy it when the 4K signal, including 59.94p, should be recorded outside the camera. Skip it when a monitor with no recorder is enough and the camera will not be set to 60p 10-bit.

Atomos Shinobi II View on Amazon View on B&H
| Input | Full-size HDMI input up to 4Kp30. No HDMI output on this model |
|---|---|
| Panel | 5-inch, 1500 nits, 210 g. USB-C power delivery. Its own battery path |
| Price | Atomos lists $349, excluding sales taxes and USA tariffs |
Why it fits the Sony a7 V. It can show a 4K signal at 30p, 25p, or 24p, which are three of the HDMI Only 10-bit options, and it can show the 1920×1080 lines. It cannot show 3840×2160/59.94p or the 60p 10-bit setting. Set the camera there, or to 1080, before counting on this screen. 1500 nits is 500 nits above the Ninja Ultra’s 1000, at $410 less, and it does not record. Log shooting while the card is recording already forces HDMI to 1080, which this input can show.
Buy it when the camera stays at or under 4Kp30 and the job is a picture, not a file. Skip it when HDMI Only is set to 60p 10-bit. That setting needs the Ultra 7 or the Ninja Ultra.

If You Need Something Else
The Shinobi II is the 4Kp30 monitor at $349. The brighter 4Kp30 panel is a different price.
SmallHD Ultra 5 View on Amazon View on B&H
| Input | HDMI 2.0 input rated 4Kp30, plus an HDMI 2.0 output. A 3G-SDI port is on the monitor. This camera has no SDI jack |
|---|---|
| Panel | 5-inch, 1920×1080, 3000 nits. 700 nits above the Ultra 7’s 2300 |
| Price | SmallHD lists $2,249. That is $850 under the Ultra 7 and $1,900 above the Shinobi II |
Buy it when HDMI is on 1080 or a 4K rate at 30p or below, and the 3000-nit panel is the point. It does not accept the 59.94p 4K line that the Ultra 7’s HDMI input is rated for. The same 4Kp30 ceiling is what the Shinobi II already has, at $349.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why 60p 10-bit is not a 4Kp30 monitor
Sony’s specification lists 3840×2160/59.94p. The HDMI Only menu lists 60p 10-bit as one of the 4K output settings. The Shinobi II and the Ultra 5 rate their HDMI inputs at 4Kp30. The Ultra 7’s HDMI input is rated 4Kp60, and the Ninja Ultra records up to 4Kp60. On every one of these panels the 4K frame is scaled to 1920×1200 or 1920×1080.
Why Log shooting can force 1080 on HDMI
If Log shooting is set to anything other than Off, or Picture Profile is PPLUT1 through PPLUT4, the help guide sets HDMI output to 1080 while the camera is recording to the card. The exception is Rec. Media dur HDMI Output set to Off (HDMI Only): that path outputs 4K, and the card in the camera is not recording.
Why this HDMI port is not a RAW output
Sony’s HDMI specification for the a7 V lists YCbCr 4:2:2 10-bit and RGB 8-bit. It does not list a RAW stream. The Ninja Ultra’s ProRes RAW line, up to 6Kp30, is written for compatible cameras. It is not the signal this specification describes.
What the 4-channel audio note means
The HDMI menu can send channel 1 and 2, or channel 3 and 4, as a left/right pair. The same help guide says it is not possible to output audio in 4 channels to a device on HDMI. The monitor receives one stereo pair.
Why the camera’s own screen is a separate number
The built-in monitor is a 3.2-type panel with 2,095,104 dots. HDMI output is 3840×2160 or 1920×1080. Those are not the same figure. The body is about 695 g with the battery pack and an SD card. None of the monitor weights above are part of that 695 g.
Final Verdict
The SmallHD Ultra 7 is the monitor whose HDMI input is rated 4Kp60, so it can show the a7 V’s 3840×2160/59.94p line, scaled onto a 1920×1200 panel at 2300 nits, listed at $3,099. The Atomos Ninja Ultra records up to 4Kp60 for $759, from a YCbCr 4:2:2 10-bit or RGB 8-bit signal, not from a RAW output this camera does not list. The Atomos Shinobi II is the $349 monitor for a 4Kp30 or 1080 setting, at 1500 nits and 210 g, and it does not show the 60p 10-bit line.
