These CPUs offer excellent performance for gaming, content creation and productivity workloads. However, they also run quite hot at stock settings and when overclocked. Keeping these CPUs cool is important to prevent thermal throttling which reduces performance. In this guide, we will go over various methods to lower temperatures and improve cooling on the Core i7-14700K and i5-14600K.

Use a High-End CPU Cooler

The first and most impactful upgrade you can make is to use a beefy aftermarket CPU cooler. The stock Intel cooler provided with the processors is just a basic aluminum heatsink and is only meant for running at stock settings. It cannot handle the 150W+ heat output when overclocking or even prolonged boosting at stock.

High-end air coolers like the Noctua NH-D15, be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 and Deepcool Assassin III are great options that can dissipate well over 200W. For even better cooling, you can use a 280mm or 360mm AIO liquid cooler like the Arctic Liquid Freezer II or Corsair iCUE H150i. The large radiator size allows them to cool up to 300W. Using a top-tier CPU cooler like these can lower temperatures by 20C or more versus the stock cooler when overclocked. It allows the CPU to run cooler at higher voltages and frequencies.

See also:

Best CPU Coolers for Intel Core i7-14700K

Best CPU Coolers for Intel Core i5-14600K

Improve Case Airflow

Your CPU cooler can only work as effectively as the air around it. Having proper airflow and ventilation in your PC case is critical for cooling. Cases like the Corsair 5000D Airflow, Lian Li Lancool II Mesh and Fractal Design Meshify 2 are excellent options with mesh front panels and included fans for high airflow.

You should have at least 2-3 good intake fans at the front and bottom, and 1-2 exhaust fans at the rear and top. This creates directional airflow that takes cool air in through the front and bottom, flows it over internal components like the CPU cooler and then hot air gets expelled out the back and top. Remove any solid panels or drive cages that obstruct airflow. Adding more fans or upgrading to high static pressure fans can further improve cooling.

See also: Best Airflow PC Case in 2023

Replace Thermal Paste

Over time the thermal interface material or thermal paste between the CPU and cooler heatsink can dry out. This reduces heat transfer efficiency from the CPU to the heatsink. Replacing the old paste with fresh high-quality paste like Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut or Noctua NT-H2 can lower CPU temperatures by several degrees Celsius.

When installing the heatsink, tighten it down properly but do not overtighten as this can actually worsen cooling performance. Apply the paste using the pea or spread method for even coverage across the CPU heat spreader. Letting the paste cure for 200+ hours can also slightly improve thermals as the paste fully settles.

See also: Best Thermal Paste for Intel Core i7-14700K & i5-14600K

Enable Undervolting

Undervolting is the process of running the CPU voltage lower than the default vcore set by Intel. This reduces power consumption and in turn lowers heat output. Undervolting can usually be done with minimal impact on performance. Many 14700K and 14600K chips can do -0.050 to -0.100v offset. This can reduce temperatures by 5-10C in workloads like Cinebench and heavy gaming.

Undervolting is done in the BIOS by changing the Vcore voltage or offset value. Make small changes like -0.010v at a time and test stability to find the lowest stable value. Monitor thermals using HWInfo64. Keep stress testing with OCCT, Prime95 or other tools and ensure system remains stable. Undervolting combined with a good cooler, case airflow and pasting can significantly improve temperatures and thermal throttling.

Use Thermal Pads for M.2 SSDs

M.2 NVMe SSDs like the Samsung 980 Pro can run quite hot when in use, especially if they are under the GPU. The drive’s controller and NAND can reach temperatures over 70°C. Putting aftermarket thermal pads on your M.2 drives can transfer heat into the motherboard heatsink or metal shielding on some boards. This reduces SSD temps by over 10°C in some cases which indirectly also lowers PCH and CPU temps.

See also: Best Thermal Pads for M.2 SSDs

Conclusion

Keeping the Intel Core i7-14700K and Core i5-14600K cool can be challenging especially when overclocking due to the high heat output. Using a beefy high-end air or liquid AIO cooler is the most impactful upgrade you can make. This needs to be combined with proper case airflow, fresh thermal paste application and undervolting for the best thermals. With the right cooling techniques, you can maximize the performance of these hot-running CPUs while keeping temperatures in check. Lower temperatures lead to less throttling, higher speeds and an improved experience whether gaming or performing demanding productivity workloads.

The Intel Core i7-14700K and Core i5-14600K are the latest mid-range to high-end Raptor Lake-S Refresh desktop processors from Intel..
