Best UPS for Garage Door Opener
When the power fails, a garage door opener is only as useful as its backup. The usual search is a 1500 VA office UPS. On a LiftMaster Wi-Fi DC head, backup is already in the motor: a 12 V slide-in battery, not a tower on the floor. The cell those openers take — the 84602 carton even includes one — is the LiftMaster 485LM.

How We Picked
Three official facts. This is an opener-battery page, not a 1500 VA home-office skip list and not a fake 5–10 cycle lab.
- Name the cell LiftMaster already ships. The 84602 product guide: 12 V DC motor, 120 V / 60 Hz / 2.7 A nameplate, UL listed, and a 485LM battery in carton 1. LiftMaster’s 485LM page: replacement for all LiftMaster integrated battery-backup openers. The 87504 / 84602 family manual: use ONLY part #485LM; a full charge supplies 12 Vdc for up to 24 hours of normal operation; recharge in 24 hours; battery life about 1 to 2 years. On backup the opener may run slower; lights, Timer-to-Close, remote close, and camera are unavailable.
- A new California opener is required to have that function. Health & Safety Code §19892 (SB 969): on or after July 1, 2019, a residential automatic garage door opener sold or installed in California must have a battery backup that keeps the opener operational without interruption during an outage. LiftMaster’s Wi-Fi opener user guide still sells AC heads without it — the warranty table leaves Battery Backup blank on 81600 / 81640 / 81650 and fills it only on 81602.
- A computer UPS is a different listing, with a different temperature. CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD: 1500 VA / 1000 W, sine on battery, 10 min at half load / 2.5 min at full, 32–104 °F (0–40 °C), UL1778. Typical applications: desktops, networking, home theater, workstations — not garage motors. High-drain loads (printers, heaters, vacuums) void the warranty. APC’s old Overall, BR1500MS, was discontinued 1 April 2022 and replaced by BR1500MS2 (1500 VA / 900 W). That is still a desk tower.

LiftMaster 485LM View on Amazon
| SKU | 485LM / 485LMC — LiftMaster |
|---|---|
| On the opener | Slide-in 12 V cell inside the motor head |
| 84602 carton | Battery (485LM) ships with the head |
| 87504 charge | 24 h to full · 12 Vdc up to 24 h of normal outage use · 1–2 year life |
| On backup | May run slower · lights / TTC / remote close / camera off · beep every 2 s |
| Replace when | Solid red LED with beep — battery will no longer hold a charge |
Why it fits a garage door opener. The old Overall was a 24.9 lb CyberPower mini-tower whose own page lists PCs. LiftMaster’s integrated path is a 12 V cell the 84602 already packs, with a 2.7 A nameplate on the AC cord. The 87504 procedure is unplug, open the control door, red/black terminals, close the panel. A CP1500 on that same cord does not replace a dead 485LM, and a 041B0591 pair does not slide into this compartment.
CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD View on Amazon
| SKU | CP1500PFCLCD — CyberPower |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 1500 VA / 1000 W · line-interactive · sine on battery |
| Runtime (CyberPower) | 10 min at half load · 2.5 min at full load · 8 h typical recharge |
| Outlets | 12 × 5-15R · 6 battery + surge · 6 surge-only · plug the opener into battery |
| Environment | 32–104 °F (0–40 °C) · UL1778 · 24.9 lb mini-tower |
| Typical applications | Desktops, networking, home theater, workstations — not listed as garage motors |
Why it is Value, not Overall. 81600 / 81640 / 81650 have a blank Battery Backup column. Those heads only have an AC cord. A 1000 W sine UPS can sit under that cord if the nameplate stays inside 1000 W — 84602’s 2.7 A line is about 324 VA. Keep the box inside CyberPower’s 0–40 °C window. Plug the opener into battery/surge, not surge-only. CyberPower voids the warranty on listed high-drain loads; stay under the watt rating. This is still a PC UPS. It is not the 24-hour 12 Vdc path on 87504.
LiftMaster 041B0591 View on Amazon
| SKU | 041B0591 (also 41B591) — LiftMaster |
|---|---|
| Kit | Two 12 V / 4.5 Ah rechargeable batteries |
| On a matching SPU | 24 Vdc to the motor for one to two days of normal operation |
| Fits | LiftMaster 8500 Series · Chamberlain WD952KD / WD952LD / HD800D |
| Does not fit | The 485LM slide-in compartment on 84602 / 87504 |
Why it is Budget. The 475LM standby power unit is the older 24 V box that sits on the motor or within 3 ft of it. Chamberlain’s 41B591 pair is the replaceable chemistry in that box: 24–48 h first charge, 3–5 year cells, lights off in SPU mode. LiftMaster’s current store SKU for that pair is 041B0591. Buy it when the head is an 8500-style 24 V pack. Do not buy it as a cheaper 485LM.
If You Need Something Else
BR1500MS was this page’s old #2 and is discontinued. Smart-UPS SMT1500 was the office/server. Neither is an opener cell.

| Opener job | Same AC-cord PC UPS as CP1500. Not a 485LM. Not a 24 h 12 Vdc cell. |
Keep a working BR1500MS. Buying new, the current cartridge is MS2, and the garage-specific part is still 485LM.

| Those SKUs | Network-card / rack extras for closets, not a 2.7 A DC opener head |
| Opener job | Works only as another AC-cord UPS. Spend 485LM money if the head already has a bay. |
Leave SmartSlot and 2U rails on a server. A garage door opener with integrated backup wants the 12 V cell LiftMaster named.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why 485LM is Overall instead of CP1500PFCLCD
The 84602 guide ships a 485LM in the carton. The 87504 manual says use ONLY 485LM and quotes 12 Vdc for up to 24 hours of normal operation. CyberPower’s CP1500 page is a 1000 W PC UPS: 2.5 minutes at full load, 0–40 °C, typical applications desktops and networking. That tower is a desk UPS, not an opener cell.
Whether a 1500 VA tower replaces a red-LED 485LM
A 1500 VA tower on the AC cord does not charge or replace a 485LM in the head. When the 87504 LED is solid red, LiftMaster’s instruction is a new 485LM. Extra VA on a PC UPS is not a 12 V opener cell.
Whether California still sells openers with no backup
Health & Safety Code §19892: after July 1, 2019, a residential opener manufactured, sold, or installed in California must have battery backup that keeps the opener operational during an outage. LiftMaster’s own 81600 / 81640 / 81650 warranty row still leaves Battery Backup blank — those AC heads are the no-pack this CP1500 Value is for, not a CA 2019+ install.
Whether lights and myQ close still work on backup
87504 / 84602 family: on battery the opener may run slower; lights, Timer-to-Close, remote close, and camera are unavailable. 81602’s user guide says the same for lights, TTC, and myQ remote close. The 475LM SPU note is the same for motor-unit lights. Backup is door travel, not a lit smart-home scene.
Why Smart-UPS SMT1500 is not Overall
SMT1500, SMC1500C, and PR1500LCDRT2U were this page’s old muscle picks — rack/network UPS. 041B0591 is the 24 V 8500 chemistry. 485LM is the 12 V integrated cell. Mixing those SKUs is how a SmartConnect cloud tower ended up next to a garage motor.
Final Verdict
For a garage door opener that already has integrated backup, buy the 485LM. Take CP1500PFCLCD when the head is AC-only and the nameplate fits 1000 W. Take 041B0591 when the pack is the older 24 V 8500 box. Leave BR1500MS and Smart-UPS on the office list. This job is a 12 V opener cell, not a 1500 VA PC tower.
