Best Dash Cam for Tesla Model Y

The Tesla Model Y already has Dashcam and Sentry on a USB stick in the glovebox. A third-party camera is for 4K plates, a rear looking through the liftgate, and a cabin channel the car does not write as a 4K file. FitcamX’s own Tesla shop still lists Model Y 2020–2021 only — not Juniper. The 2026 first buy is the VIOFO A229 Pro 3CH: 4K front, 2K rear, 1080p infrared cabin, on any Y year.

Who should buy what

  • Any Model Y year, including Juniper, family/rideshare, hatch rear: VIOFO A229 Pro 3CH. 4K + 2K + IR cabin. Keep TeslaCam in the glovebox.
  • Long parking, less Sentry-always-on: Thinkware U3000 front+rear. Radar parking needs hardwire or OBD-II with a voltage cutoff. No cabin camera.
  • Windshield must stay empty; Sentry already on: Garmin Dash Cam Mini 3. 1080p polarizer cube. Parking Guard is not in the box.
  • 2020–2021 Model Y OEM cowling only: FitcamX Tesla SKU (connector behind the seat). Confirm the mirror cover photo. Not Juniper. A 2023 owner review on FitcamX’s own page says it did not fit.
  • Skip: USB hubs on the glovebox port. Powering a 4K cam from TeslaCam USB-A. FitcamX as a Juniper “OEM” buy. BlackVue as a copy of the Model 3 page. 70mai Omni wrong SKU for this product as a 4K hatch kit.

How We Picked

Three official facts decide the cam. Everything else is a pairing.

  • TeslaCam is the glovebox USB-A, with written drive rules. Minimum 64 GB, sustained write at least 4 MB/s, USB 2.0 compatible (USB 3.0 drives must also speak 2.0), format exFAT / MS-DOS FAT / ext3 / ext4 (not NTFS), root folder named TeslaCam. After about November 1, 2021, center-console USB-C is often charge-only — use the glovebox USB-A to format, save, and view footage. Tesla: do not connect multiple devices with a USB hub. Rear USB ports charge only. (USB Drive Requirements for Recording Videos; Interior Electronics)
  • Built-in Dashcam/Sentry and a 4K stick-on cam are two systems. Tesla Dashcam still wants that formatted stick, preferably in the glovebox. Enable Dashcam under Controls > Safety. Sentry is the parked mode. A VIOFO/Thinkware/Garmin unit records to its own microSD and needs 12 V / a hardwire kit — not the TeslaCam port. FitcamX’s Tesla product page lists Model Y 2020–2021 (connector behind the seat), Model 3 2017–2022, S/X 2017–2022 on the mirror cable. Juniper is not on that list. (Tesla Model Y Dashcam; FitcamX Tesla SKUs)
  • Hero SKUs from the makers. VIOFO A229 Pro 3CH: STARVIS 2 IMX678 4K front + STARVIS 2 IMX675 2K rear + 1080p IR cabin, HDR, dual-band Wi-Fi, GPS. Thinkware U3000: STARVIS 2 IMX678 4K/30 or 2K/60, rear 2K IMX335, built-in front+rear radar, parking needs hardwire or OBD-II. Garmin Mini 3: 1080p, 140°, Clarity polarizer, 30 g, supercapacitor, Parking Guard not included. (VIOFO A229 Pro; Thinkware U3000; Garmin Dash Cam Mini 3)

Model Y jobAny Model Y year, including Juniper — hatch + cabin
PowerCigarette or hardwire kit (parking)

Model Y is a liftgate crossover, not a Model 3 trunk. The 2026 first buy is the A229 Pro 3-channel kit: 4K up front, 2K out the hatch, infrared cabin. FitcamX’s own Tesla page still stops at Model Y 2020–2021.

Tesla already records Dashcam and Sentry to a USB stick. That is a separate system: Autopilot cameras, compressed clips, glovebox USB-A on cars built after about November 1, 2021. A third-party cam is for 4K plates, a dedicated rear looking through the hatch, and a cabin channel Tesla does not give you as a 4K file. Keep the TeslaCam drive in the glovebox. Do not steal that port for the VIOFO, and do not add a USB hub — Tesla’s interior-electronics note says hubs can stop Dashcam / Sentry / Media Player from seeing the drive.

VIOFO’s A229 Pro 3CH: front Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 8 MP, 4K 30 fps, f/1.8, ~140°. Rear Sony STARVIS 2 IMX675 5 MP, 2K 30 fps, ~160° — that is the Model Y pairing. Route the rear cable through the liftgate grommet, not down a sedan trunk. Cabin 1080p with infrared LEDs. Dual-band Wi-Fi, GPS, supercapacitor (the glass roof is a greenhouse). Buffered parking needs a hardwire kit with a low-voltage cutoff; driving-only can use the 12 V / low-voltage outlet Tesla documents in the cabin. VIOFO lists the 3CH carton as 4K + 2K + 1080P. Buy 3CH, not the 2CH commute kit, if the cabin is the point.

This is not an OEM cowling. The camera sits on the windshield near Tesla’s own camera cluster — keep it out of the Autopilot view. It is Overall because it does not care whether the Y is a 2021, a 2024, or a Juniper. FitcamX does.

  • 4K STARVIS 2 front + 2K STARVIS 2 rear through a liftgate + IR cabin
  • Year-proof: Juniper and pre-refresh share the same windshield mount
  • Supercapacitor for glass-roof heat; TeslaCam USB stays in the glovebox
  • Visible on the glass — not an OEM mirror cover
  • Rear cable through the hatch is a real install; parking needs a hardwire kit

Model Y jobLong parking without 24/7 Sentry
PowerDC 12/24 V hardwire or OBD-II for parking

Sentry keeps the car awake. Thinkware’s radar parking is the other way: low-power watch, then a 20-second clip when the radar sees motion. That is Value on a family hatch that sits in lots, not a second 3-channel cabin cam.

Thinkware U3000: front 8.4 MP Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678, 4K UHD 3840×2160 at 30 fps or 2K at 60 fps, 152° diagonal, Ambarella, H.265, supercapacitor, thermal protection, microSD up to 256 GB. Rear (optional kit): Sony STARVIS IMX335, 2K QHD. Built-in radar on front and rear. Radar parking: 24 GHz, sensitivity roughly 1–5 m, objects slower than about 20 km/h, then a 20-second clip. Thinkware: radar parking and the other parking modes need a hardwiring cable or OBD-II power cable. Tesla Model Y has no conventional ICE fuse box the same way — use a Tesla-specific hardwire/OBD kit with a voltage cutoff, not a tap that fights the 12 V architecture.

No cabin channel. If the job is Uber / kids in the second row, that is still the A229 Pro 3CH. U3000 is the parking specialist: Energy Saving, Time Lapse (2 fps), Smart Parking in heat. THINKWARE CONNECTED on this SKU wants a separate hotspot, not the phone that set the cam up. Rear radar on a liftgate is the Model Y reason to buy the dual-channel kit, not the front-only box.

Leave Tesla’s glovebox stick in place for Sentry if you still want Tesla’s own clips. The U3000 writes to its own card. Two systems, two cards.

  • Front+rear radar parking with a written 1–5 m band and 20-second clip
  • 4K STARVIS 2 + supercap + thermal protection under a glass roof
  • Rear 2K for the hatch without a third cabin brick
  • No interior camera
  • Parking modes need hardwire/OBD — not the glovebox USB-A

Model Y jobStealth front-only; keep Tesla Sentry for parking
Power4 m vehicle cable + dual-USB adapter in the box

If the windshield must stay empty and Sentry already covers the lot, Mini 3 is the 30-gram polarizer cube. It is not 4K and not a hatch cam.

Garmin Dash Cam Mini 3 (010-02899-00): 1080p up to 30 fps, 140° diagonal, Garmin Clarity polarizer plus Clarity HDR, voice control, supercapacitor, 5.21 × 3.16 × 2.03 cm, 30 g, adhesive mount, Wi-Fi to the Garmin Drive app. microSD 8–512 GB, Class 10, FAT32 (Garmin’s card list). Parking Guard is not in the box — Garmin wants a Constant Power Cable and a Vault subscription for that alert path. GPS stamps need a second GPS-enabled Garmin cam. The carton includes a 4 m vehicle power cable and a dual-USB adapter. Use the cabin 12 V / USB charging point. Not the glovebox TeslaCam USB-A.

Model Y’s panoramic glass is glare. The polarizer is why Mini 3 is Budget here instead of a generic 1080p cube. Loop recording while you drive; Tesla Sentry on a ≥64 GB, ≥4 MB/s, USB 2.0, exFAT stick in the glovebox for the parked hours. Two jobs, two devices. Skip Mini 3 as a 4K evidence cam and skip it as a rear-hatch kit — Garmin Auto Sync can add more Minis, but that is extra cubes, not VIOFO’s 2K rear.

  • 30 g stealth; polarizer for glass-roof windshield glare
  • Supercapacitor; Sentry stays on Tesla’s own USB rules
  • Voice control + Drive app without a 3-channel install
  • 1080p, no native GPS, no rear/cabin in the box
  • Parking Guard is an extra cable + Vault, not a radar kit

Frequently Asked Questions

Why add a dash cam when Model Y already has Sentry Mode?

Sentry and Tesla Dashcam write compressed clips from the Autopilot cameras to a USB stick. A dedicated cam adds 4K (or Mini 3’s polarizer 1080p), a rear aimed through the liftgate, and optional cabin IR. Keep both: TeslaCam in the glovebox, third-party footage on its own card.

Does FitcamX fit a 2025–2026 Model Y Juniper?

FitcamX’s Tesla page lists Model Y 2020–2021 with a connector behind the seat. Juniper is not on that list. A 2023 owner review on the same page says the cover did not fit. Confirm the housing with a photo before ordering any “OEM Tesla Y” cam.

Can the glovebox USB-A power a 4K dash cam?

Use that port for Tesla’s own Dashcam/Sentry stick (64 GB+, 4 MB/s sustained, USB 2.0, TeslaCam folder). After ~November 2021 the console USB-C ports are often charge-only. Tesla says not to use a USB hub. Power VIOFO/Thinkware/Garmin from the 12 V / low-voltage outlet or a proper hardwire kit with cutoff — not by stealing TeslaCam.

How does a rear camera go on a Model Y versus a Model 3?

Model Y is a hatch. The rear cable has to pass the liftgate grommet so it does not pinch when the glass/hatch opens. A Model 3 sedan trunk route is the wrong picture. Buy enough cable and a Y-specific hatch kit if the carton is generic.

Will an aftermarket dash cam void Tesla warranty?

A plug-in 12 V lead or a listed OBD/hardwire kit is reversible. Damage from a shorted tap is another matter. FitcamX still wants trim pulled around the mirror cover. The glovebox USB stick is Tesla’s documented path and does not replace a 4K cam.

Is this the same kit as the Model 3 dash cam page?

No. That page leads a 2-channel BlackVue. This page is a liftgate Y: A229 Pro 3CH overall, U3000 radar parking, Mini 3 stealth, and FitcamX locked to 2020–2021.

Model Y already has Sentry on a glovebox USB-A stick. Start with VIOFO A229 Pro 3CH — 4K, 2K through the hatch, IR cabin, Juniper included. Use Thinkware U3000 when radar parking matters more than a cabin camera. Use Garmin Mini 3 when the glass must stay empty and Sentry covers the lot. Do not buy FitcamX as a Juniper OEM part, and do not hub the TeslaCam port.
