Best External Monitor for Canon EOS R5 Mark II
The R5 Mark II already records 8K RAW internally at 60p to CFexpress. HDMI is full-size Type A, 10-bit 4:2:2 up to 4K 59.94p — not 4K120, and not the original R5’s micro port. For a 1500-nit panel with USB-C camera control and touch-to-focus that Atomos lists for this body, the monitor is the Shinobi II.

How We Picked These Monitors
- The body: Canon EOS R5 Mark II is a 45 MP stacked full-frame, about 138.5 × 101.2 × 93.5 mm, 656 g stripped / 746 g with LP-E6P and card. Rear screen is 3.2-inch, 2.1 million dots, vari-angle. HDMI is Type A (full-size), HDMI-CEC not supported. Internal: 8K RAW Light up to 59.94p, 8K RAW Standard to 29.97p, 4K up to 119.9p, C-Log 2 and 3, 10-bit 4:2:2. Optional CF-R20EP cooling fan. Dual cards: CFexpress Type B + UHS-II SD.
- What actually leaves the HDMI port: Canon lists uncompressed YCbCr 4:2:2 10-bit at 4K DCI/UHD up to 59.94p, plus Full HD. 4K120 and 8K60 stay on the CFexpress card. 8K RAW or 4K SRAW ProRes over HDMI is a recorder path — Canon points you at the recorder maker. Atomos maps 8K DCI RAW (8192 × 4320) at 23.98–29.97p and 4K DCI RAW to 59.94p. Starred 8K rates need Ninja TX, Shogun AV-19, Sumo PRO-19, Ninja V+, Ninja Ultra, Shogun Connect, or Shogun Ultra — not the regular 2023 Ninja (6K RAW ceiling). AtomOS 11.09: set the recorder HDMI Standard to Compatibility Mode, not 2.0, or RAW lock can drop when you punch Q. HDMI RAW also wants LP-E6P; Canon’s own footnote disables HDMI RAW on LP-E6NH / LP-E6N.
- Monitor HDMI 1.4 vs the camera’s 4K60: Shinobi II is HDMI 1.4: DCI/UHD 4K30 and 1080p60. LUT6 and most sub-$250 5–6-inch panels are the same 4K30 class. PT6 tops out around 4K24. For those screens, set the R5 II HDMI output to 1080p60 (or 4K30) and let the body record 8K or 4K120 internally. Buy Ninja Ultra (HDMI 2.0, 4Kp60) only if you need the 4K60 clean feed or 8K30 ProRes RAW on an SSD.

Atomos Shinobi II View on Amazon View on B&H
| SKU / ASIN | ATOMSHB003 · B0DBQWXY4B |
|---|---|
| Panel | 5.2″ 1920 × 1080 · 1500 cd/m² · AtomHDR |
| HDMI | 1.4 in · 4K30 / 1080p60 |
| Control | USB-C: record, WB, shutter, aperture, ISO, overlays · T2F (AtomOS 11.03+) |
| Power | NP-F · USB-C PD in/out · <10 W · ~210 g |
Why it fits the R5 Mark II. This camera does not need an external recorder to “get RAW.” Internal 8K60 Light RAW already outruns HDMI 8K30 ProRes RAW. What the 3.2-inch flip screen cannot do is sit in front of a gimbal operator with waveforms and a record trigger. Atomos lists EOS R5 Mark II for USB-C camera control and for touch-to-focus. That is a second cable next to Type A HDMI — use the included locking HDMI + USB-C adapter, not an R5 Mark I micro-HDMI clamp. HDMI 1.4 will not swallow the camera’s 4K 59.94p clean feed; drop HDMI to 1080p60 or 4K30. C-Log2/3 preview is AtomHDR / LUT, not a graded master. No fan, which is the wedding-vow argument against a Ninja on the same hot shoe cluster.
Skip this if you needed 8K ProRes RAW or 4K60 HDMI locked without changing the camera menu — Ninja Ultra. Skip it if noon sun still eats 1500 nits — LUT6 or R6 UHB.
- Official R5 II USB-C control and touch-to-focus
- 1500 nits, no recorder fan, Type A HDMI + lock adapter
- HDMI 1.4 — not the camera’s 4K60 feed
- No SSD / no ProRes RAW

Feelworld LUT6 View on Amazon View on B&H
| SKU / ASIN | LUT6 · B08D6SQDN7 |
|---|---|
| Panel | 6″ 1920 × 1080 · 2600 cd/m² · ~300 g |
| HDMI | In + loop · UHD/DCI 4K30 · 1080p60 |
| Tools | Waveform, false color, peaking, HDR, user LUTs via SD |
Why it is Value, not Overall. 2600 nits is the outdoor gap Shinobi II still has. Loop-out feeds a wireless TX while you keep tools on the 6-inch. It will not talk USB-C to the R5 II, and 4K input stops at 30p — same HDMI diet as Shinobi II, without AtomOS or T2F. That is why it is cheaper, not why it is Overall. Load a C-Log2/3 to Rec.709 LUT; do not treat the panel as a Canon reference display. Six inches is large on an RS 4-class gimbal; five-inch Shinobi II still wins that job.
Skip this if you needed record trigger from the glass — Shinobi II. Skip LUT7 if the camera is already on a gimbal (7-inch).
- 2600 nits and LUT/HDR tools under Shinobi money
- 4K30 loop-out for a second monitor or TX
- No Canon USB-C control; 6″ on a gimbal is bulky
- Still not 4K60 HDMI

Desview R6 UHB View on Amazon View on B&H
| SKU / ASIN | R6 UHB · B09124JHHG |
|---|---|
| Panel | 5.5″ 1920 × 1080 · 2800 cd/m² |
| HDMI | 4K-class in/out — treat as 1080p60 / 4K30 on this camera |
| Power | NP-F or LP-E6 plate · DC 8 V out on some kits |
Why this panel. 2800 nits is why it exists. The R5 II’s 3.2-inch LCD is not a desert monitor; this is. Tools (waveform, false color, LUT, HDR) are present. Color is not AtomOS. A cooling fan can sit next to the camera mics — bad for vows, fine for a loud set. Same HDMI rule: do not expect 4K 59.94p lock. It is Budget because it is a bright window, not a control surface.
Skip this if you needed silent monitoring or USB-C T2F — Shinobi II. Skip PT6 if you thought “budget” meant 600 nits in sun; this is the brighter cheap one.
- 2800 nits at the low end of 5-inch money
- Touch tools, LUT, HDR preview
- Fan; not a reference panel; no camera control
- HDMI 4K60 from this body is not the job

If You Need Something Else
These two are not cheaper Shinobis. One is the 8K30 ProRes RAW recorder. One is the old Value pick that cannot do noon or 4K60.
Atomos Ninja Ultra View on Amazon View on B&H
| Why it exists here | HDMI 2.0 4Kp60 · 8K ProRes RAW 30p on Atomos’ R5 II list |
|---|---|
| Not this | Regular “Ninja” (6K RAW max) · 4K120 over HDMI |
| Camera catch | LP-E6P for HDMI RAW · Compatibility Mode in AtomOS 11.09 |
Internal 8K RAW Light is 59.94p. HDMI 8K ProRes RAW is 29.97p on the Ultra / V+ / Shogun class. Buy Ultra if you want ProRes/ProRes RAW on an SSD, 4K60 HDMI lock, or dual-record proxies — not because the R5 II “cannot record RAW.” Fan noise is real next to the camera mics. The previous Layer 2 “Ninja” does not get the starred 8K rates on Atomos’ own R5 II table.
Skip this if you only needed a bigger picture and a record button. That is Shinobi II, and you keep 8K60 on CFexpress.

Portkeys PT6 View on Amazon View on B&H
| Panel | 5.2″ · 600 nits · 100% DCI-P3 · 165 g |
|---|---|
| HDMI | About 4K24 / UHD 30 — not the R5 II’s 4K 59.94p feed |
| Nice extra | LP-E6 battery plate · LUT on the HDMI loop |
The old Value pick. 600 nits is an indoor / shade number on a camera that lives in C-Log2 outdoors. HDMI headroom is below Shinobi II and LUT6. Fine as a 1080p vertical-video assist with an LP-E6 from the same charger as the body. Not the default R5 II monitor.
Skip this if you needed sun or 4K30 lock. That is LUT6 or Shinobi II.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I monitor 4K120 over HDMI?
No. Canon’s HDMI table tops out at 4K 59.94p (plus HD). 4K120 and 8K60 are internal. Watch 1080p60 or 4K30 on the monitor while the CFexpress card takes the high-frame-rate file.
Does an external monitor stop overheating?
It does not replace CF-R20EP or a lower codec. HDMI RAW has its own power rules (LP-E6P). A recorder adds heat and a fan. Monitoring-only Shinobi II is the lower-draw path if the body is already hot.
Is this still a fragile micro-HDMI camera?
No. Mark II is full-size Type A. Strain relief still matters; buy a Type A lock, not an original-R5 micro clamp.
Will Shinobi II replace eye-control AF?
No. Touch-to-focus moves a point on the monitor. Eye-control AF is the EVF. USB-C control does iris, shutter, ISO, white balance, and record — not the whole R5 II menu.
Final Verdict
The R5 Mark II has Type A HDMI, 4K 59.94p 10-bit out, and 8K60 RAW already inside. Buy Shinobi II for USB-C control and touch-to-focus; set HDMI to 1080p60 or 4K30. LUT6 if you needed more nits than Atomos. R6 UHB if brightness is the only budget. Skip PT6 as the default, skip the regular Ninja for 8K RAW, and do not plug HDMI RAW into an LP-E6NH.
