Canon’s high-sensitivity full-frame CMOS sensor succeeds in capturing nighttime video of fireflies Thu, 12 Sep 2013 09:19:44 +0000 Read More »]]>

Canon high-sensitivity full-frame CMOS sensor

Canon published a press release for successfully captured video footage of Yaeyama-hime fireflies flying in darkness, a feat made possible by the high-sensitivity 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor developed by Canon for video capture that was announced in March 2013.

Press Release:

TOKYO, Japan, September 12, 2013—Canon Inc. has successfully captured video footage of Yaeyama-hime fireflies flying in darkness, a feat made possible by the high-sensitivity 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor developed by Canon for video capture that was announced in March 2013.

35mm full frame sensor

The high-sensitivity, low-noise video-shooting capabilities of the dedicated 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor for Full HD video capture were made possible not only through the integration of the high-performance sensor technologies employed in Canon’s digital SLR cameras, but also through the incorporation of new pixel and readout circuitry technologies that reduce noise.

Using a camera prototype equipped with the CMOS sensor, Canon, in cooperation with ZERO CORPORATION, succeeded in capturing video of the Yaeyama-hime fireflies that inhabit Japan’s Ishigaki Island, located off the northeastern coast of Taiwan. No artificial lighting was used during shooting, which took place after sunset amid the island’s mountains. Despite an exceptionally dark shooting environment of less than 0.01 lux, a level in which the naked eye would have difficulty discerning surrounding objects, the CMOS sensor was able to capture not only the color of the light emitted by the fireflies, each of which measures only a few millimeters in length, and their movements, but also the surrounding vegetation in which the species lives. Plans call for the footage to be used to benefit future research into the Yaeyama-hime firefly.

In addition to astronomical and natural observation, Canon is looking into applying this CMOS sensor to medical research purposes as well as surveillance and crime-prevention equipment. Through the further development of innovative CMOS sensors, Canon aims to expand the realm of photographic possibilities while cultivating the world of visual expression.

An excerpt from the video of the Yaeyama-hime fireflies is available for viewing below.

Canon Full Frame Compact Camera

Is Canon working on a full frame compact camera ?

Canon France leaked two new categories on their official website: the Compacts 24×36 (Full frame) and the Compacts APS (APS-C).

Could this be the big product launch in next several weeks ?

We already have full frame compact cameras such as Sony RX1/RX1R, and APS-C compact cameras such as Fujifilm X100/X100S. Maybe Canon will also make some large sensor compact cameras.

Pentax K-3 24MP full frame DSLR to be announced on March 27th ? Mon, 25 Mar 2013 04:00:56 +0000 Read More »]]>

Previous rumors shows that Pentax is going to announce several DSLRs and APS-C compate camera soon. Now new rumors from PR told us that the full frame Pentax DSLR – Pentax K-3 is to be announced on March 27th next week.

Pentax K-3 will be featured with a 24MP full frame sensor.

Also, Mike Svitek who has posted this on his g+ account:

“Testing out the new Pentax K-# HDSLR  [ icon wink Pentax K 3 24MP full frame camera announcement on March 27th? WINK WINK… NUDGE NUDGE ]  with the Pentax 77mm Limited Prime lens … 1/500s f/11 ISO25600 Custom WB

I love the tones, the dynamic range is amazing, and the resolution (while being too high for my taste) has its advantages when clearing up some noise. With the combo of the new sensor and processor, there is very little noise to clean up in the first place. It only starts showing up visibly at around ISO6400 (becoming obvious here at 25,600 and pretty bad at the extended range of 102,400) … As I already stated, this camera sits between its competitors with the D800 and the D4 or the 5D Mrk.3 and the 1DX .”
